LITHOS

Barks made more than 150 Disney duck paintings of which a few were transferred into lithographs and serigraphs in different editions of quality. Both series were promoted in different ways, a few of which are presented below.

This is an example of a Certificate of Authenticity as issued for all the lithos. Although the numbered certificate implies that the litho has been purchased, it provides much promotional information. The selected certificate is for the painting 22/72 Vacation Panel, that was later renamed Leaving Their Cares Behind.

This is an example from a promotional brochure in 12 pages containing several graphically rendered lithos with descriptions as well as listings of numerous other Barks lithos. The centerfold page seen here contains information on 03/76 July Fourth in Duckburg.

Barks often did his own canvassing(!). He had a list of potential customers for his lithos and they received a short notice when one was ready for sale. To the left is Barks' original leaflet from 1980 for his latest litho based on 1/80 Xerxes and Harem. Included in the mail was a small photo of the painting (presented to the right in a blown up size) as well as an order form offering the litho as Print, Artist's Proof, and Remarque. Notice that Barks had not signed the original painting yet.
