BOOKS

As Barks got better known to the public, their need to know more about his life and various works grew. This resulted in a number of books, many of which were very elaborate and pricey. The most impressive ones were published in small quantities and were signed personally by Barks. Below you are presented to some of the promotional activities and brochures that accompanied a few of the books.

For many years Barks had worked on a large series of, primarily, watercolours with the general title Famous Figures of History as they might have looked if their Genes had gotten mixed with Waterfowl. Finally, in 1996, it was time to present the bulk of them in a book, which received the title Animal Quakers. It was promoted through a 6-page promotional brochure of which two pages are rendered here.

One of the pastels

In 1997 Scrooge McDuck celebrated his 50th birthday, and The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida saw a chance to promote this occasion along with his 'father', who was invited to simultaneously celebrate his 96th birthday in the special event called A Birthday Celebration! The celebration was held in the finest restaurant in the park, the California Grill, on top of Disney's Contemporary Resort Hotel, and invitations were sent out well in advance (left).
The evening included an exclusive gallery featuring a selection of works by Barks: A collection of 75 newly finished pastel (colour pencil) drawings on which Barks had been working secretly for 6 months!
Later, 40 of the new pastels were selected for a high-class reproduction in a hardback book called Barks Treasury.

In 1998 a stamp booklet was produced by Inter-Governmental Philatelic Corporation to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first appearance of Uncle Scrooge in the 1947 comic book story from FC0178 Christmas On Bear Mountain. The small US-booklet (17,5cms by 23cms) reproduced the entire story partly as stamps. There were two story pages on one stamp sheet. Only the top and bottom panels were perforated, so not every panel of the story was a stamp. The stamp value was 35 Guyana dollars. The pages of the stamp booklet went in this order: Cover showing a watercolour painting made especially by Barks, the actual story, a souvenir sheet page with the text and pictures, and a back cover titled Tribute To Carl Barks. Barks signed all of the 85 booklets and helped promote them.
