COMICS

Through the years the Walt Disney Company employed numerous publishing houses to print and distribute their comic book stories. Western, K.K., Dell, Whitman, Dynabrite, and Gold Key are the best known names from Barks' era, and later Another Rainbow (Gladstone) followed suit. Barks' stories were the main focus as for Gladstone.

This is one of the earliest advertisements for Disney comic books made by Dell Publishing (this is only a copy, the original was made in colour). The advertisement is from 1947 when Barks had only been in the business for a few years. Still, Dell felt the need to acknowledge him as a rising star by including no less then 3 of his stories in the picture.

Most of the Disney comic books contained promotional material for the company's other magazines. This is one example - taken from the back cover of Dell Publishing's WDCS176 from 1955 - advertising for subscribers.

Gladstone Publishing started several comic book series exclusively containing Barks stories. The series mounted to 144 issues spanning from 1992 to 1998. This example shows the back cover of the Carl Barks Library in Color's album number 25 in the WDCS series.
