HERBIVOROUS

KANGAROOS

  FC0159 Adventure Down Under - 1947

Synopsis:
Donald is hypnotized into believing that he is a kangaroo and he is drawn to Australia where the kangaroo queen terrorizes the land.

Comments:
The Ducks also visited Australia in U$11 Riches, Riches Everywhere, U$38 The Unsafe Safe, U$62 Queen of the Wild Dog Pack, WDCS212 'Rocket Race', and WDCS226 'The Drifting Island', but this story is the only one in which kangaroos played a prominent and important part.

CAMEL

  WDCS160 'A lively Present' - 1954

Synopsis:
The nephews are searching for a Christmas present for Donald. Why not a camel?! Well, it needs a lot of attention!

Comments:
The camel has a will of its own - and a taste for soda pops - and it carries Donald off into the desert without him being able to stop it. NB.: Technically, the animal should be called a Dromedary (distinctive features: short fur coat, long legs and neck, one hump), but it is also known as the Arabian Camel.

CHIPMUNK

  WDCS168 'The Mascot' - 1954

Synopsis:
The nephews' mascot - the chipmunk Cheltenham - annoys Donald and he decides to get even. Using alligators!

Comments:
The chipmunk literally carries the keys to the main plot, as it is good at finding keys the Ducks have lost. It's bright head and helpful attitude carries the day.

LEMMINGS

U$09 The Lemming with the Locket - 1955

Synopsis:
Scrooge hides his safe-combination in a medallion which ends up around the neck of a lemming, which then runs away. The search takes Scrooge and his nephews to Norway but, alas, it is a lemming year...

Comments:
When the deadline for this story neared, Barks had second thoughts about having chosen lemmings in the panels, because they had to be drawn by the hundreds, and he and his wife were due for a vacation. Fortunately, Garé helped her husband draw the little critters - and the couple could go off on a well-deserved holiday...

BULL

  WDCS182 'Grandma's Bull' - 1955

Synopsis:
Donald wants to participate in the Farmers' Fair and he borrows Grandma Duck's gentle bull for the purpose. Eh, gentle???

Comments:
As we all know a bull is colourblind which is why it does not react to the bull-fighting arena's matador when he waves his cloth in front of the bull. It is the movement of the cloth which enrages the animal. But in this story gentle Johnny the Bull is enraged by the colour blue, and he promptly attacks anything of that colour (with the strange exception of Donald's hat!)...

GOPHERS

  WDCS189 'Nature Rules' - 1956

Synopsis:
Donald decides to beautify his backyard at springtime but there are gophers below with different ideas...

Comments:
In the end Donald is forced to acknowledge that he cannot go against Mother Nature, and the industrious gophers can go back to digging their holes. In U$51 How Green was My Lettuce the Money Bin was undermined by the Beagle Boys' trained gophers so Scrooge's money had to be moved immediately from the tilting building.

REINDEER

  WDCS208 'Roscoe the Reindeer' - 1958

Synopsis:
The nephews are having fun with their sled in the snowy hills but it is tiresome to drag the sled upwards. Luckily, Gladstone has a reindeer!

Comments:
Barks made a few stories in which reindeer were a part, but this story is the only one in which a reindeer takes center stage - without really doing anything! Most of the time the nephews try to hide it from Donald...

HORSES

  WDCS234 Riding the Pony Express - 1960

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews are guests on a dude ranch and they decide to revive the old Pony Express just for fun. But the game becomes serious!

Comments:
Horses have been used countless times as a simple mean of transportation by most of the ducks, but in a relatively few stories the horses also play a vital part such as in this one. In WDCS035 'Lost in the Desert' Donald takes the nephews out into the desert where he promptly gets lost, but the horses can find the way back to their stables, and in WDCS059 'Colt Taming' Donald brags to the nephews about his abilities to tame a wild colt...

GOATS

  U$36 Money Bag Goat - 1961

Synopsis:
Scrooge has been given a goat with some strange eating habits. It only eats dollar bills! He flies the goat to a valley in order to force it to turn to grass instead...

Comments:
Scrooge's plan works perfectly, but he is not satisfied, because he discovers that he had use for its ability to find the money he had lost in the wilderness. In FC1010 Weather Watchers Gyro is helping Grandma by inventing a machine that can predict the weather. However, it is no better than the farm's goat allows! Barks made several stories in which Grandma's goat participated but it was always in minor roles.

SHEEP

  WDCS266 Stalwart Ranger - 1962

Synopsis:
Donald is a ranger in Duckburg's forest service. One day he is sent out to count wild sheep. But can he stay awake?

Comments:
Sheep are typical flock animals which may be a contributing reason why Barks did not make that many stories where he had to draw them by the dozens. This story is one exception. Another one is FC1010 Sheepish Cowboys in which Grandma Duck is visited by the nephews who play cowboys using her soft and woolly sheep - but the Big Bad Wolf is after the wool as well...
