WATER-LIVING

SHARKS

  WDCS033 'Donald the Life Guard' - 1943

Synopsis:
Donald is a life guard with a special attitude towards sharks!

Comments:
Donald is brave enough to battle any shark any day when his nephews are in peril - or a bathing beauty is in distress...

SEALS

  FC0108 Seals are so Smart - 1946

Synopsis:
Donald is photographing at the beach while the nephews play baseball. A baby seal wants to play and Donald sees the opportunity for some easy money.

Comments:
But this is not to be, because the baby seal has a protective mother, that interferes with Donald's plans. NB.: Technically, Barks did not draw seals but sea lions, which is quite easy to see as the latter species is the only one with outer ears.

FISH

  WDCS066 'The Ice Fisher' - 1946

Synopsis:
Donald claims to be an expert on ice fishing but he immediately gets into trouble with a large fish. Perhaps dynamite is the solution?

Comments:
The river is teeming with fish but - in contradistinction to the nephews - Donald is not able to catch even one of them. He tries, though, to land one certain and most irritating fish that manages to elude him time and again.

FROGS

  WDCS108 'The Master Jumper' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald wants to teach the nephews about fancy food but the price of frogs' legs are too steep for him. So why not catch the delicacies himself?

Comments:
Upon catching a big representative for its species, the Ducks decide not to eat it after all, so they enter it in a jumping competition instead! This also happened in WDCS216 'Catapult the Jumping Frog' where Donald trains a bullfrog for a big jumping contest. It really could be a winner, if it wasn't for the fact that it hates the cold!

BASS

  WDCS153 'Angler's Delight' - 1953

Synopsis:
Gyro is breeding worms that drag fish out of the water. Donald is an avid angler. Now for some serious fishing...

Comments:
The ruler of the lake, the grandfather of all the lake's basses, old Bombastro, immediately catches Donald's attention. This large and clever fish is to become the catch of the day. And Donald succeeds in 'wheeling' it in by the help of some special friends...

ALLIGATORS

  WDCS168 'Sized Up' - 1954

Synopsis:
The nephews' mascot - the chipmunk Cheltenham - annoys Donald and he decides to get even. Using alligators!

Comments:
Although he, in reality, scares off his nephews, Donald, in some way, offers a solid parental lesson to the nephews, who wish for a little alligator as pet. But they are not thinking ahead; someday that little pet will be fully grown! Donald illustrates the dilemma with increasingly-sized alligators within a few hours!

CLAM

  WDCS177 'Sinking Deep' - 1955

Synopsis:
Vacation at last! The nephews want to go to the mountains but Donald longs for the beach. A trip inside a diving sphere makes him change his mind.

Comments:
Donald, sitting in his diving sphere, is quickly caught by a giant clam which, in turn, is carried off by a giant starfish. The clam's role in this story is not a big one but it is crucial to the plot, because it treats the sphere as if it was a pearl, whereupon Donald cannot be recognized.

WHALE

  WDCS193 'A Whale of a Whale' - 1956

Synopsis:
Donald intends to make a lot of money by capturing a whale and keep it confined in a cove. But it has to be fed - a lot...

Comments:
As we have often seen it Donald is not thinking his actions through, and he soon realizes that lodging and feeding a whale is beyond his abilities, so he sets it free.

PORPOISES

  WDCS218 'Porpoise Hunting' - 1958

Synopsis:
Donald sees an opportunity to earn some easy money by delivering porpoises to the Seashow Aquarium. But he has to catch them first!

Comments:
Again, Donald fails to think his plans through! Although a porpoise is considerably smaller than a whale, it is more lively - and it comes in flocks!

SALMON

  U$37 Deep Down Doings - 1962

Synopsis:
Scrooge finds a chest of pearls beneath the sea but he is discovered by the Beagle Boys. He then tries to smuggle the pearls past the villains by attaching them to a school of salmon...

Comments:
The salmon seems to have been Barks' favourite choice of fish in his stories, because they were included in several of them. Other examples: In WDCS167 'Salmon Contest' Donald is checking on how to catch the biggest salmon in a contest in order to win a Snobmobile, in WDCS192 'The Non-expert'
Donald claims to be a fish culture expert and gets a job in a salmon hatchery, and in U$31 Fishy Warden Gyro disguises himself as a salmon in the hope that he can find and expose the thieves who are stealing the salmon in the Duckburg River.
