WINGED

FALCONS

  WDCS047 'Rookie Falconeer' - 1944

Synopsis:
Donald receives a falcon as a gift but it has been trained to fetch prey for its master which complicates things a bit...

Comments:
Donald has no knowledge of how to deal with the animal and one disaster leads to another. In WDCS240 The Fraidy Falcon tables are completely turned, because the timid falcon is not trained and Donald does his best to make a 'man' out of the bird!

PARROTS

  WDCS065 'Joe from Singapore' - 1946

Synopsis:
The nephews want a pet but the parrot Joe from Singapore might not be the best choice...

Comments:
As soon as the parrot comes into Donald's home - without his acceptance - troubles are standing in line! The parrot originally belonged to a sailor and it has certainly taken on a few of a sailor's less valuable qualities; it is obnoxious and it has a foul mouth! In FC0282 The Pixilated Parrot the bird was considerably more good-natured; it spent all its time counting anything...

TURKEYS

  WDCS075 'Dinner or Not' - 1946

Synopsis:
The nephews win a live turkey for Thanksgiving but they get too attached to it to eat it. So Donald has to find another turkey for dinner...

Comments:
Barks made several stories in which turkeys played a key role. Other examples: In WDCS087 'The Strange Bird' Donald can not afford a turkey from the butcher's and he decides to hunt for one instead, in WDCS162 'Hungry Turkeys' stationmaster Donald is looking after a consignment of very hungry baby turkeys, and in WDCS243 Turkey Trouble Donald tries to trick Gladstone into buying some land apparently filled with turkeys.

ALBATROSS

  FG1946 Santa's Stormy Visit - 1946

Synopsis:
Donald manages a lighthouse that is pestered by an albatross. Furthermore he has forgotten to buy Christmas presents for his nephews...

Comments:
The bird is not a pest per say - it only likes to be where it can get some warmth. And what better place than a lit lighthouse in a freezing night?

CHICKEN

  WDCS146 'Omelet' - 1952

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews become chicken farmers on a hilltop but it is not that easy to earn a living.

Comments:
Barks drew a great number of chickens for this story of which he had some first-hand knowledge; at the time he dabbled with chicken farming himself! In FC1161 The Day the Farm Stood Still he only had to draw one small chicken, the adventurous Roger, who was expected back on Grandma Duck's farm after a long trip.

BEES

WDCS158 'To Bee or Not to Bee' - 1953

Synopsis:
The nephews are keeping honey bees as a Junior Woodchucks project. But Donald is left with all the trouble...

Comments:
...which, among others, incorporate a catastrophic trip downtown in order to dispose of the bees at the city dump. In WDCS080 'Beautify Your Garden' Donald intends to join a competition for the best flower garden, and he starts off by purchasing a beehive.

KINGFISHER

  WDCS192 'The Non-expert' - 1956

Synopsis:
Donald claims to be a fish culture expert and gets a job in a salmon hatchery. Soon he is up against a kingfisher!

Comments:
In this story Donald has megalomania in the sense that he is certain he can master everything in nature. Maybe so, but this one little bird immediately proves too much for him - and his ego...

PENGUIN

  U$17 A Cold Bargain - 1957

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys all of the rare Bombastium in the world, but no one knows what it can be used for.

Comments:
Although the penguin is not a prominent figure in this story it plays a key role, because it is able to locate Scrooge's missing ball of Bombastium at the South Pole. It has simply taken the contemporary lost ball for its own egg and a devoted female penguin's sense of motherhood and direction is nothing to be trifled with...

MYNAH

  WDCS222 'The Bragging Bird' - 1959

Synopsis:
Donald is very successful at his moving job until one day he is hired to move the animals from a zoo...

Comments:
Just as the parrots mentioned earlier the bird in this story can talk. But its temper ranges between the two other birds; it loves to brag and flex its muscles! A fairly innocent trait apart from the fact that it lets Donald do all the fighting...

STORK

  FC1047 The Stubborn Stork - 1959

Synopsis:
Gyro has invented the flying one-man bike-saucer but he finds no buyers until Scrooge contacts him to get a stork removed from his Money Bin roof.

Comments:
It is not that easy to get rid of the obstinate animal, because, as it turns out, it enjoys nesting on top of one particular roof vent which leads warm air from the Money Bin.
