Apart from the obvious fact that the duck
universe is swarming with anthropomorphic ducks, dogs, bears, and
so on, almost all of Carl Barks' stories contain a certain number
of so-called dumb animals, i.e. animals that do not think, talk,
and behave as the primary characters. They are usually seen in
the background or as helpers to our heroes, but once in a while
they obtain leading roles in the stories.
In the sub-pages you will find a variety of story examples with
different animals. In order to be considered in the sub-pages a
particular animal must either play a major contributing role or
have a substantial impact on the plot. Example: The story with
the bears in FC0178 Christmas on Bear
Mountain is admitted because of their
substantial roles, but the story with Glittering Goldie's much
less important guardian bear in FC0456 Back
to the Klondike is not, because it only
plays a small and dispensable role.
The sub-pages demonstrate Barks' colossal and highly impressive inventiveness in dreaming up stories with so many species, but they still just represent examples (10 to each page arranged in chronological order after dates of publishing). If you wish to browse a fuller - but by no means complete - list of the dumb animals Barks used in his stories you may want to look HERE.
