1948-1949

  WDCS088 'Cocky Combatants' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald bets that he can bathe in the lake during winter and Gladstone bets that he can drink two gallons of lemonade in one hour. Will they ever learn?

Comments:
Just as it was the case with Scrooge the year before, Barks presents us to Gladstone in his first story in an incomplete form; he looks different from the character we would later come to know, and he is certainly not exactly lucky!!!

  WDCS095 'Braggers Unlimited' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are bragging about their imaginary wealth but when Daisy asks for a small contribution for her club they have a problem...

Comments:
From now on Gladstone seems to have been blessed with a distinctive good luck gene. Some may even assert that he has earned the right to brag about his good fortune. True or not, that is exactly what he does! In fact, he is a genuine pain in the neck to those around him, because he does not possess the gene that tells him when to stop.

  WDCS096 'Hole-in-One - or Two' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald forces the nephews to act as caddies at the golf court although they want to go fishing. They decide to manoeuvre Donald through the course in order to get off quickly!

Comments:
Donald plays a perfect golf game to Gladstone's irritation, but when Donald finally misses, he gets ecstatic with joy!

  WDCS103 'The Maharajah's Ruby' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are looking on the beach for a lost ruby belonging to the Maharajah of Backdore. The finder's fee is 10,000 dollars!

Comments:
Sometimes Gladstone shows up just as Donald is about to have a lucky break, but Gladstone's bragging presence makes him loose his nerve. In this story Donald finds the precious ruby and Gladstone is reduced to being the driver of Donald's brand-new car.

  WDCS110 'Goldilocks' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald goes to bring his nephews back from summer camp but they have decided to play Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Real bears get involved!

Comments:
In regard to Gladstone this story is nothing short of sensational!!! It is the only one in which the bone-idle and work-shy luckster is actually maintaining a job!!! He is a park ranger, but he (and Barks!) are defending this thoroughly contradictory behaviour by simply arguing that he was tired of doing absolutely nothing!!!

  FC0256 Luck of the North - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald gets tired of Gladstone's never-ending luck so he sends him up north with a fake treasure map. But Donald's bad conscience will not let him alone...

Comments:
After having robbed the Ducks from their treasure Gladstone coldly sails away leaving them stranded on an iceberg in the Arctic Sea.

  WDCS111 'Old Loveletters' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald hides his loveletters to Daisy but Gladstone gets hold of them by accident. Now Donald has to get them back in a hurry...

Comments:
Gladstone's role in this story is mostly ornamental; he is merely the wall, where Donald is the bouncing ball.

MOC41 Race to the South Seas - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are each given a yacht from Scrooge who apparently has been marooned on an island. They both try to be the first to rescue him..

Comments:
Gladstone thinks he has it made when he finds the missing Scrooge on a tropical island, but the old miser did not want to be found at all.
