SCROOGE

  FC0386 Only a Poor Old Man - 1952

Synopsis:
Scrooge tries to hide his money in a faraway lake so the Beagle Boys cannot find it. But it is not that easy...

Comments:
This is the first of several stories in which Scrooge actually manages to flee with all his money out of Duckburg to a secret hiding place, in this case a distant lake. The marvelous twist is that it is the Boys themselves who, unwittingly, are the transporters...

  FC0495 'Water Tank Money Bin' - 1953

Synopsis:
Scrooge exchanges his coins into bills, as they do not take up as much space. Then they are placed in a Beagle Boys-proof water tank. But is the money safe?

Comments:
Again, Scrooge flees with his money under the Boys' noses, and again they manage to find its whereabouts. After having lured both Scrooge and the Duckburg police force the Boys then manage to flee with all the money...

  U$04 'Hawaiian Hideaway' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys a volcanic island where he intends to hide his money. But the Beagle Boys learn about his plans ...

Comments:
... so the chase is on! Scrooge must now flee with his money (once again exchanged into dollar bills) cleverly hidden in spinach cans, but the sneaky Boys are able to stop him flat in his tracks and use him as their personal servant. Scrooge's fleeing days are definitely over - for the moment...

  U$21 The Money Well - 1958

Synopsis:
The Beagle Boys arrange to suck the money out of the Money Bin but luckily the nephews discover an old tunnel leading from the tank to the riverbank.

Comments:
The main scenario is familiar (the Boys try to steal Scrooge's money, while he tries to hide them in a safe place), but Barks has dreamt up a new route of transportation. Scrooge is able to flee with all his money through an underground tunnel system only to place it out of sight at an old property of his.

  U$31 All at Sea - 1960

Synopsis:
Scrooge sails home with a billion dollars in gold. But the Beagle Boys are following so he disguises the gold as corn. Now, beware of hungry rats!

Comments:
On a few occasions Scrooge is not fleeing from the Boys with his Money Bin money. He is fleeing from the Boys in order to place new valuables in his Bin. In this story he returns with a stack of gold, and in U$70 The Doom Diamond he flees in order to return with the world's largest diamond.

U$48 The Many Faces of Magica de Spell - 1964

Synopsis:
Magica discovers a brew that changes people's faces. Will Scrooge give up his number one dime for the antidote?

Comments:
When the Beagle Boys are not around to steal all Scrooge's wealth, he often faces Magica who only tries to steal one coin - the old Number One Dime. In this story, which is one of several, Scrooge has to flee around the world from the determined witch, until he can finally settle in the Valley of the Faceless People.

  U$37 Deep Down Doings - 1962

Synopsis:
Scrooge finds a chest of pearls beneath the sea but he is discovered by the Beagle Boys. He then tries to smuggle the pearls past the villains by attaching them to a school of salmon...

Comments:
Scrooge's plan is as clever as it is simple; knowing that the adult salmons travel back up the river to where they were born, he places pearl necklaces around all the salmons' tails and let them do the escaping with the valuables. Then he calmly awaits their arrival to the river.

  U$32 Clothes Make the Duck - 1961

Synopsis:
Scrooge tries to avoid Daisy's party because he has nothing decent to wear. But will he succeed in avoiding Daisy?

Comments:
Trying to flee from a determined woman is often a futile decision, but Scrooge makes the attempt and pays the price. In the end he winds up with all his clothes torn to shreds when he is finally caught.

  U$06 'Tralla-La' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge is stressed and after having reached his breaking point he travels with Donald and the nephews to Tralla-La where the concept of money is unknown. Until they arrive...

Comments:
The basic concept of flight is of a physical nature, but in this story Scrooge is fleeing for mental reasons. One's mind can only take so much before it dictates a, sometimes drastic, change of lifestyle. In this story Scrooge is actually fleeing from himself...

MOC41 Race to the South Seas - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald and Gladstone are each given a yacht from Scrooge who apparently has been marooned on an island. They both try to be the first to rescue him...

Comments:
This story is quite sensational, because Barks lets Scrooge - the duck universe's most devoted and steady worker - play hooky!!! As it turns out the miser did not at all need to be rescued. He just fled his many responsibilities in order to be left in peace...
