DONALD

  WDCS112 'Rip van Winkle' - 1950

Synopsis:
The nephews want to skate but Donald makes them go down south with him. There they pull a trick on their uncle making him believe that he has been sleeping for 20 years!

Comments:
This story contains a double flight. First of all Donald desperately yearns for a warmer climate, which is why he winds up in Florida. Then he is lured back but on the way he is involved in a nightmarish vision - based on the unwitting sniffing of ether - purposely showing Duckburg in 20 years time. This makes him flee and return home again.

  WDCS178 'Noisy Neighbours' - 1955

Synopsis:
Donald moves to a quieter neighbourhood in order to get a good night's sleep. But it is not that simple with an alpenhorn blower in the house...

Comments:
It is Donald's wish to escape from the big city's many noises that literally makes him flee his home in the beginning. His new home should be soothing for his nerves - until he himself becomes the instigator of much more noise...

  WDCS280 Double Masquerade - 1964

Synopsis:
Donald dresses up as Scrooge to avoid an appointment. Scrooge dresses up as Donald to avoid a donation. The game is afoot...

Comments:
Both are fleeing from different obstacles throughout the story; Donald tries to avoid a training session with his surfer buddies, while Scrooge tries to wriggle out of having to donate a sum of money for charity.

  WDCS146 'Omelet' - 1952

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews become chicken farmers on a hilltop but it is not that easy to earn a living.

Comments:
From time to time Barks used a special authorial technique in his stories. They began and ended in the present, but in the intermediate time we are reliving the actions that preceded the present time (see examples
HERE). But it was only in a few of the stories we learn that Donald was indeed fleeing from something, and the first and last page are wrapping up the reasons.

  WDCS204 'Cleaning Up' - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews are hired to clean the huge stone head of Senator Snoggin on the side of Mount Mushmore. It's a bit of a nosy job...

Comments:
This is the other flashback story in which the main plot is sandwiched between a beginning and an ending taking place in the present. As it was the case in WDCS146 'Omelet' Donald and the nephews are driving around with Daisy, who merely serves as the audience to hear about the disastrous events - just as we do.

  WDCS263 The Candy Kid - 1962

Synopsis:
Donald gets a job selling sweets at The Duckburg World's Fair. The manager thinks he is a genius...but for how long?

Comments:
This story only serves as an exponent for several stories in which Donald is more or less masterful in some skill, but in the end he is forced to flee from angry crowds. In this story he winds up in Timbuktu, which must be familiar to him as this was his refuge in WDCS201 'The Super Dye' as well, but he has been in self-chosen exile in so faraway places as the isle of Capri, the South Orkney Islands, and Antarctica...

  WDCS101 'Nightmares' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald is plagued by nightmares. His doctor recommends he take up some crocheting to steady his nerves. Then Daisy comes for a visit...

Comments:
In this story Donald is constantly fleeing from scary beings - foremost in his dreams. His nightmare foes are Martian monsters, devilish pirates, sharks, wolves, lions, and bears...

  WDCS147 'Blackmailed' - 1952

Synopsis:
Through Daisy's Good Neighbor Club Donald volunteers to offer a needy person a meal. It turns out to be Gladstone!

Comments:
Donald has understandable reservations feeding on his scrounging cousin, so he flees to Florida. Unfortunately for him Gladstone manages to accompany him. Donald's generous, charitable gesture ends up costing him dearly.

  WDCS232 Under the Polar Ice - 1960

Synopsis:
The nephews have won a trip on a submarine but Donald stows away rather than face a punishment of peeling ten sacks of potatoes. But there are more potatoes that need to be peeled aboard the sub!

Comments:
So Donald's flight backfires in a big way. But this unfortunate turn of events does in no way stop his desire for freedom; he mindlessly flees out into the unforgiving and icy landscape gladly risking his own life!

  WDCS213 'Spring Cleaning' - 1958

Synopsis:
Donald is doing whatever he can in order to avoid being forced to take part in Daisy's yearly spring cleaning.

Comments:
Donald is in flight mode throughout most of the story, because he will under no circumstances succumb to his fate. Consequently, the nephews, the Junior Woodchucks hound, and Daisy are soon in hot pursuit...
