While Carl Barks worked as storyman and
cartoonist at the Disney Studios he only had one hobby, and that
was - making cartoons! He would happily spend all of his evenings
and weekends drawing cartoons in the same style that he was used
to from the Calgary EyeOpener days. This attitude had cost him
his first marriage with Pearl, but now he had remarried and,
apparently, his new wife Clara accepted her husband's time-consuming
hobby.
At the time the couple lived in various apartments within walking
distance of the studios (first near Hyperion Avenue and later
near Burbank), and most of Barks' cartoons had the current
address drawn on either the front or the back. Strangely, he was
not especially interested in signing the cartoons; many of them
have no signature at all.
Undoubtedly, Barks made several hundreds of
these drawings during his Disney years, but they were only
occasionally sold. In fact, he kept the unsold ones under lock
and key for the rest of his life, but now they are surfacing in
connection with the auctioning of his estate. The sub-pages will
show you a variety of the cartoons Barks made before he started
his Disney duck stories.
Regrettably, most of the cartoons' durability have suffered
technical problems for many reasons during the years; none of
them appear 'fresh from the mill', they were drawn on different
qualities and colours of paper, and the sketched ones were drawn
with soft pencil strokes - both black, blue and red - that fade
in time. Still, you will probably agree that all the shown
cartoons fill a gap in Barks' life, and that their technical
flaws can be overlooked.
It is this website's intention to add more moonlighting cartoons from Barks' Disney years to the sub-pages as they emerge - so be sure to come back! |
