GYRO'S REALISTIC INVENTIONS

DYE EXTRACTS

  WDCS201 'A Dyeing Story' - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald is hired to pour bug powder into Duckburg's water reservoir but by accident he pours red dye into it instead. The result is somewhat different!

Comments:
The dye is extremely powerful: A few drops easily mix with all the water in the vast reservoir. Such potent dye extracts, that are to be used very sparingly, are now commonly used in the industry.

TREE GROWTH INJECTIONS

  U$38 Madcap Inventors - 1962

Synopsis:
Gyro gets a new neighbour and - lo and behold - he turns out to be an inventor as well. Soon a feud has started to see who is the better inventor!

Comments:
Barks is, of course, grossly exaggerating the two inventors' abilities when he lets them invent one botanical impossibility after another. They conjure up a breadfruit tree with real loafs of bread, a cherry tree with fruitcakes, an apple tree with apple pies, a peanut butter sandwich tree, a salad fruit tree, and many more.
What remains is that arborists (tree doctors) nowadays inject fertilizers or pesticides directly into the trunks of trees to help them grow.

INFLATABLE BUBBLE HOUSES

  U$19 'Pure Inflation' - 1957

Synopsis:
Gyro is hired to invent a house that is not made out of wood, stone or metal. It also has to be noiseless and soft as a pillow. What an order!

Comments:
Gyro solves the problem by simply inventing an inflatable house made from a special rubber compound. Although the poor Gyro is required to blow it up my mouth, the novel idea from that time is nowadays used for movable sports halls, churches and more.

ONE-MAN FLYER

  U$46 'Gall of a Gull' - 1963

Synopsis:
Gyro is using his combined rocket belt and portable sprayer to paint the new bridge. But a seagull is not at all impressed by the ingenious and busy inventor...

Comments:
A rocket belt, that can lift a man up into the air and make it possible for him to fly around at will, was first seen publicly at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, USA, where it flabbergasted the world at the opening ceremony. This goes to show that Barks was ahead of his time - on this occasion by 21 years!
But Gyro invented several other devices of the same basic nature; several hovercraft cars (FC1184 Monsterville, SF Fun, What's That?, U$17 'Tricky Tackle', U$47 'Man Versus Machine'), a hovercraft boat (U$35 Fast Away Castaway), a bike-saucer (FC1047 The Stubborn Stork), floating chairs (CP8 Grandma's Present, U$20 'Roscoe the Robot'), and even a floating hammock (U14 'Fencing Off the Neighbour') ...

CYCLONE DETECTOR

  U$24 'Stormy Invention' - 1959

Synopsis:
Gyro has invented a cyclone warning machine and he decides to try it out at Cyclone Hill. Then he sits down and waits for a cyclone to appear...

Comments:
Again, Barks was far ahead of his time! Especially since the devastating and disastrous tsunami hit the South-East Asian coastal areas in December, 2004, wave and wind detectors have been installed in many potential disaster areas in an attempt to get a reliable first warning.
But Gyro also invented another much needed meteorological instrument; in FC1010 The Weather Watcher he presented a precise and trusty weather forecaster...

PETROL

  U$14 'Fencing Off the Neighbour' - 1956

Synopsis:
Gyro is constantly disturbed by the noise from his neighbour's irritating kids as he tries to invent a special high-speed petrol for a very impatient customer...

Comments:
Since the first petrol-driven motorcar saw the light of day, scientists have attempted to better the performance of the powerful liquid. Along the way many sorts of additives have greatly improved the petrol. Maybe the day will come, when Gyro's Super-Speed Gasoline - capable of turning the speed performance of any old car into that of a race car's - will be a reality...

ALL-ROUND TRANSPORT

  FC1184 Monsterville - 1961

Synopsis:
Gyro has made his greatest invention. He has changed Duckburg into a place of total relaxation. But is everybody happy?

Comments:
Duckburg has become a futuristic city where Barks frisks about with an abundance of plausible inventions - some of which have yet to be realized: a weather dome covering a whole city, a one-man hovercraft vehicle, teaching devices in your pillow, thinking fire hydrants, and much more. Still, the changed Duckburg is teeming with ultramodern transport devices such as air-cushion cars, slideways, and monorails.
In U$29 Island in the Sky from the previous year Duckburg was also transformed into an ultra modern city where rockets were the basis for all kinds of transportation.

VIDEOTAPE CAMERA

  SF Jungle Hi-jinks - 1959

Synopsis:
The nephews are selected to shoot a movie in the jungle with their special camera. Donald tags along to tease them...

Comments:
The nephews find one of the greatest inventions of the last decades thrown at the city dump by a disappointed Gyro. In the story, it is called Instant Developing Film Camera, but it is easy to see that it has the facilities and abilities of both a Polaroid camera and a videotape camera. Quite an invention Gyro discarded all those years ago!
