In the USA - as well as in many other Western countries - some special, festive holidays take place during the year. And Carl Barks managed to dream up ideas for most of them in a few of his stories. The following list covers all of his stories for 6 popular holidays shown in alphabetical order. A few comments are attached. Christmas has its own page which can be savoured HERE, and the vacation stories can be found HERE.

APRIL FOOLS' DAY
WDCS127 - 1951

The nephews are trying their best to make a sucker out of Donald on April Fools' Day but they are not successful.
Comments: The nephews launch several clever plots against Donald who never notices them. In the end he even comments that they did not attempt to fool him!

WDCS211 - 1958

On April Fools' Day Donald reads a book about black wishing stones on a tropical island and the nephews make fun of him for believing the story. But soon after they are all on their way...
Comments: The nephews' plot backfires in a big way, because Donald sells the house to make the trip. And again he never notices the nephews' involvement.

EASTER
WDCS151 - 1953

Donald wants to be grand marshal for the Easter Parade. He has to distribute sweets to the children to get them to vote for him.
Comments: Barks only made one story about Easter celebrations. Surprising, really, because this very holiday offers so many useful ingredients for a good story.

HALLOWEEN
DD26 - 1952

TRICK OR TREAT
The nephews are collecting goodies for Halloween but Donald has decided to tease them. A real witch joins in to fight the battle against the stingy uncle...
Comments: The story originates from a Jack Hannah produced Donald Duck animated short by the same name - and from the same year. Barks was asked to make a comic book version. At the time, the cartoon was not finished and Barks had only some of the storyboard sketches for reference material. Realizing that the cartoon could not fill a normal 32-pager, he altered the story to such a degree that it can be said to be mostly his creation. One of the innovations is the monster Smorgasbord. Barks did not see the original animated short until several years later.

WDCS217 - 1958

Donald is stage struck and he is offered the leading role in Daisy's Halloween drama. Unfortunately, Gladstone is interested in the very same part...
Comments: Barks recycled the plot from the 1951 10-pager WDCS128 which took place during the summertime.

WDCS254 - 1961

JET WITCH
The Duckburgians decide to hold a quiet Halloween this year but Donald doesn't hear of the plan and makes it the worst Halloween Duckburg has ever seen...
Comments: When the story was first published in Denmark, Halloween was not commonly known as a holiday. So the publisher Egmont decided to use the European holiday Shrovetide - which also incorporates some Trick and Treating - instead. However, this festive event takes place during the daytime. This forced Egmont to change all the nighttime panels into daytime panels!

NEW YEAR
WDCS173 - 1955

As a New Year's resolution the nephews vow that they will not be late for school again or they will wash the dishes for a month. Donald in turn vows that he will not loose his temper!!!
Comments: This story represents one of the very rare occasions in which the nephews are not just seen as one organism. Here Louie takes a prominent part.

WDCS185 - 1955

Time for New Year's resolutions. Donald resolves to cook only the kind of food his nephews like. The nephews resolve to eat only the kind of food their uncle likes. Collision course...
Comments: Barks managed to create a masterly plot in which the ducks were supposed not to know of each others' vows. And, this is yet another rare occasion; Dewey takes the lead this time.

THANKSGIVING
WDCS075 - 1946

The nephews win a live turkey for Thanksgiving but they get too attached to it to eat it. So Donald has to find another turkey for dinner...
Comments: In one panel the nephews are actually singing 'Jingle Bells', but Thanksgiving is the event!

WDCS087 - 1947

Donald cannot afford a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner from the butcher's and he decides to hunt for one instead. And he succeeds - more or less...
Comments: The only story in which Barks is showing a little bit of the background for the holiday; Donald is talking about the pilgrims and he is wearing the typical settler costume while hunting with an ancient gun.

WDCS147 - 1952

Through Daisy's Good Neighbor Club Donald volunteers to offer a needy person a Thanksgiving meal. It turns out to be Gladstone!
Comments: The Luckster blackmails Donald to such a degree that Donald is forced to put up his own name as a needy person for a Christmas meal!

WDCS183 - 1955

Donald plans to go into the woods to shoot a turkey for his Thanksgiving dinner. He uses the custard gun that Gyro has invented. It can also shoot moose...
Comments: The second story in which Donald is actually hunting for a turkey. This time he uses a custard gun!

WDCS243 - 1960

TURKEY TROUBLE
At Thanksgiving Donald is tricked into buying a plot of land filled with chickens disguised as turkeys. He tries to trick Gladstone in turn...
Comments: Barks was really in a 'fowl' mood in this story which he filled with lots of turkeys.

VALENTINE'S DAY
WDCS150 - 1953

Donald is a mailman during a winter blizzard on Valentine's Day and the nephews are training for JW merit badges. They also rescue Donald from the wrath of Daisy.
Comments: In this story Barks is not romantic at all. Poor Donald is losing on all fronts.

WDCS258 - 1962

TEN-CENT VALENTINE
Using a specially scented Valentine's Day card Magica is trying to steal Scrooge's lucky dime so he gives Old Number One to Donald. When she realizes a switch has been made she goes after Donald...
Comments:
No romance in this one, either. No surprise - Magica is never lovable!
