After having spent 27 years in the
greater San Jacinto area in California, Garé and Carl Barks
moved to Goleta, 120 kilometres (75 miles) northeast of Los
Angeles, where they stayed from 1969 to 1977. They resided in a
large house with a rather special architecture (several built
together blocks, two storeys, tall window sections). The house
can still be seen today. The only difference that can be observed
from the street is that it has changed colour.
A visitor stepping inside the house would quickly see that a
couple of painting artists occupied the premises, because the
walls were filled with their own oil paintings - and many more
were made during the 8 years. Garé had one of her most
productive periods, and Carl was still learning the ropes after
his long comic book period. It was during the Goleta years he
obtained his first permission to paint the Disney ducks, and his
interest for painting in oil never ceased.
The sub-pages present a tiny selection of the hundreds of photos taken from outside and inside the house with emphasis on the couple's paintings. The pages are arranged in chronological order within the two main groups. All of the photos were taken by the couple or with the couple as the subject of the photos. This means that numerous photos that include different friends and visitors have been omitted. The bulk of the published photos have never been published before.
