Everyone has a date on which they
celebrate their yearly birthday. But this is not necessarily the
case with comic book characters. Their dates of birth are usually
shrouded in veils. In the Disney universe you will only find
three characters whose birthdays are officially recognized. And
none of those three (Donald Duck, Mickey and Minnie Mouse)
started their lives as babies. They all entered the scene as
adults!
How does one establish a plausible date of debut for the
characters Carl Barks used in his comic books? Well, one could
simply take the date when the first story for a certain character
was created - which in practice constitutes the date the story
was received at the publishing company - and let that particular
date be the day of debut. And if the character was 'born' in a
cartoon, the first release date would be the date to choose.
Barks used many recurrent
characters in his stories. Some were his own creations, whereas
others were taken from existing comic book and cartoon universes.
The total number of characters and groups of characters falling
into the mentioned three categories - 60 in all - are presented
in the sub-pages with their date of debut as well as a mentioning
of their individual debut in Barks' stories.
The listings enable you to clearly see the order in which the
characters had their debuts, and you may occasionally be
surprised to learn when some of the characters emerged compared
to each other. Who knows, you may discover that one of the
characters' birthday is the same as yours! Enjoy...
