Some of the primary characters in Carl Barks' funny animal comic book stories tend to be perceived as less than successful in several situations. But although they are seen in an unflattering light, they have all had their red-letter days as well. This page attempts to give a few examples of specific characters in uncharacteristic situations.
Below you are treated to some of the normally bungling and unsuccessful Beagle Boys' more rare, triumphant moments.
WDCS134 'The Beagle Boys Cannon' In this his first story with the Boys Barks merely uses them as plot line bogeys, until they finally emerge in graphic form in the last panel as no more than casual passersby when Scrooge's office bin has broken open. Here they end up (for the first and only time!) with a big chunk of Scrooge's money seemingly for keeps!!! |
FC0386 Only a Poor Old Man The Boys strike gold in this story - and on legal grounds to boot!!! In the end their lot is flooded with all of Scrooge's money, and it is only a stroke of genius on Scrooge's part that means that they are not going to keep the spoils. |
U$21 The Money Well The Boys are, once again, extremely lucky as it turns out that Scrooge by a gross mistake happens to hide all of his money under their property! But in the end the Boys are foiled as it turns out that they have come by the estate illegally. |
U$28 The 'Paul Bunyan' Machine By use of a giant chopping machine the Boys chop down and process the many forest trees where Scrooge has hidden all his money. |
U$04 'Hawaiian Hideaway' Scrooge buys a volcanic island to hide his money. But the Boys learn about his plans disguised as robots(!), and soon they take command over the entire fortune. |
U$58 The Giant Robot Robbers Nothing like a direct approach! The Boys manage to steal Duckburg's brand-new fleet of giant work robots, and they use them to peel open the Money Bin and carry the loot away in oversized buckets. Big business doesn't get any bigger than this... |
U$31 All at Sea Scrooge sails home with a billion dollars in gold. But the Boys are following so he conceives an idea of chopping up the gold into small pieces and camouflage it as corn. But due to a rare stroke of luck the Boys find out and steal all the good stuff. |
FC0495 'Water Tank Bin' Scrooge exchanges his coins into less voluminous bills and places them in a Beagle Boys-proof water tank. But the Boys manage to break the tank loose from its supporting legs and simply roll it along. Easy money is often on a roll... |
U$66 The Heedless Horseman For once the Boys are not after Scrooge's money! Instead they have their eyes set on the valuable Great Crystal Orb. But their greatest triumph is their newest invention, Beaglemite, an extremely (but unstable) powerful explosive... |
WDCS291 Delivery Dilemma The Boys lure Scrooge to sign a contract in which he pledges to safely deliver a dozen wild rabbits eggs to King Yamhok on Taro Island. If he fails, he loses his entire fortune! In the end Scrooge actually fails to deliver the eggs unharmed, so, for a very brief moment, the shrewd Boys are Hyperfantasticatillionaires... |
U$63 House of Haunts The Boys have obtained degrees in Chemistry, Psychology, Brain Fibrillation, Metallurgy, Electropyrotechnology, and 176-176 in Cranial Encephalography. As a 'diplomat' he knows exactly where to gently tap Scrooge's head in order for him to lead them right to all of his money, which he has laborously hidden in a secret location. |
U$42 The Case of the Sticky Money The Boys have constructed an ingenious system of small belt-driven vehicles that can make their way inside the Bin and bring out the money little by little. Had the Boys only contented themselves with minor 'withdrawals' instead of flaunting their ill-gotten wealth, they probably could have lived as kings for the rest of their lives... |
