USUAL - MOTORIZED

SHIPS
  WDCS283 Cap'n Blight's Mystery Ship - 1964

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews are shanghaied to serve as crew on a dubious ship.

Comments:
Vessels propelled through the water by the force of larger motors are usually called Ships. The ducks were frequent users of ships, especially when they travelled back and forth to new adventures abroad, but only a very few stories actually unfolded onboard ships. In another story Donald took a cruise along with Daisy and Gladstone in WDCS312 The Not-So-Ancient Mariner.

FERRIES
  WDCS260 Merry Ferry - 1962

Synopsis:
Donald runs a small ferry route with just a few daily customers. One day the route is besieged by new customers, but the regular ones have priority...

Comments:
A Ferry is a ship used for short crossings of many people. Besides this one Barks made two stories in which paddle wheelers steamed along on the Mississippi River; U$11 The Great Steamboat Race and U$GTD 'The Fantastic River Race'.

SUBMARINES
  WDCS172 'Treasure at Sea' - 1955

Synopsis:
Scrooge forces Donald and the nephews on a trip in his submarine to find a sunken treasure. On Christmas Eve! That is most unbearable for the kids...

Comments:
The owning of submarines is normally restricted to nations, but Scrooge has one to play around with! In another story (WDCS232 Under the Polar Ice) most of the action took place on an ordinary, military submarine.

AIRPLANES
WDCD The Dainty Daredevil - 1968

Synopsis:
Daisy seeks a new job and a fortune teller tells her that she is destined for high places. So, naturally, she becomes an acrobat on an airplane!

Comments:
Although the ducks were frequent users of airplanes when they travelled abroad, Barks only made two stories in which the plots - partly - called for them to travel aboard a flying machine. Besides this 4-pager it was FC0147 Volcano Valley in which Donald by mistake buys an old military plane that has to be flown to its new destination.

SCOOTER
  U$45 The Travel Tightwad - 1963

Synopsis:
Scrooge discovers that it is expensive to travel in a manner consistent with one's station so he replaces his limousine with a motor scooter.

Comments:
Barks excelled himself when choosing the means of transport for this story: A whole story about a common scooter! That has probably never happened in the world of funny animals before...

CARS
  CP2 You Can't Guess - 1950

Synopsis:
Donald's family tries to discover what he wants for Christmas, because that is the only way for the nephews to get what they want. Meanwhile Donald tries to get his car to function...

Comments:
Cars are frequent means of transport in Barks' stories, and Donald's little red car is the most often used. In this particular story the distinct car is crucial to the overall plot, and we follow it while it slowly deteriorates. Amazingly, it was fit to fight again in the following story...
