The rejected, duckless splash panel

The approved, published splash panel

DD26 Trick or Treat - 1952

Originally, Barks drew 32 pages for this story but only 23 were published. 9 pages were censored by the publisher and returned to Barks. The page numbers are 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24. They contain scenes that Barks invented for the story (it was originally based on an animated short by the same title). The monster Smorgasbord is the prominent character on the pages.

Barks recalls: In the part where Hazel is trying to bust into Don's closet, I departed from the movie script and added some business with an ogre that Hazel summons. Alice Cobb (Western's editor at the time - Editor's remark) deleted the extra business and didn't pay me for the unwanted pages. She was that mad.

Furthermore, Barks' initial splash panel has survived. It was rejected because it did not show any of the ducks. Barks corrected this by drawing another panel. Finally, the upper half of page 28 has also survived.

Page 16 was sold in 1976, page 19 in 1973, the lower half of page 24 in 1991, and the upper half of page 28 in 1977.

Rejected panels 3 and 4 planned for page 15
FC0456 (U$02) Back to the Klondike - 1953

Originally, Barks drew 32 pages for this story but only 27 were published. The rejected pages were numbers 12, 13, 14, 15, and the lower half of 20.

Barks recalls: The (rejected) pages were not returned to me. Some one of the editors must have taken them home and sold them in the years since.

That seems to be the case, because the entire story has been restored. For instance, page 14 was on the market in 1974.

Scrapped panels 3 and 4 planned for page 9
FC0495 (U$03) 'The Water Tank Story' - 1953

Only one half page has survived, because Barks rejected it himself and filed it. It was planned as the upper half page of page 9.
