Footwear is probably not the first type of garment that comes to mind when thinking of the characters in Carl Barks' duck universe. Footwear is a relatively rare feature in the panels where Donald Duck and the nephews roam. As a matter of fact, they don't even wear anything on their webfeet! The only ducks that always wear shoes are the women. In-between is Uncle Scrooge who wears spats, which are a type of footwear but not really shoes.
This is a page about shoes - in the broadest sense of the word - in Barks' comic books.

THE REAL ONES

Women's shoes.
This timeless type of shoe with medium height heel has been popular for almost a century. Daisy and Magica wear these sturdy shoes.

Men's shoes.
Shoes for men often look pretty much alike. Most of them have laces for tightening. Gyro, Little Helper and the Beagle Boys wear similar shoes.

Bootees.
These practical boots were particularly popular among the women from older generations. The bootees were often made by soft calf leather, they had a wooden heel and a row of buttons. Grandma wears bootees.

Spats.
This rather strange type of men's footwear has been known for centuries, but they were especially popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Their purpose is to protect the shoes that they cover partly. Scrooge, Gladstone and Glomgold wear spats, even though they don't wear shoes!

THE PUZZLES

How does Daisy get her feet into shoes?
Broad webfeet and pointy shoes are not compatible, but when it comes to a woman she often seems to wear shoes of a smaller size than needed...

Does Scrooge ever remove his spats?
Except for the examples above he is always seen wearing his spats. But at least this snapshot proves that he does not wear them in bed...

THE OVERKILL...

Well...
