GIVEAWAY STORIES

From 1945 to 1954 Barks made a number of the so-called Giveaways, which were not part of the usual duck series and to some extent the stories were financed by companies other than Disney. As they did not come in any specific order or at any specific time they are all considered quite rare today. The two mentioned below are real rarities.

1947 Donald Duck and the Atom Bomb

CG (Cheerio Giveaway)

30 one-tier panels in 10 pages

Synopsis: Donald invents a bomb that goes fut instead of boom. The simple reason being that it has a very special quality...

The story was later redrawn by the Dutch artist Daan Jippes and various panels were censored textwise. Furthermore a few panels were drawn with minor alterations.

The whole story can be read here: http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/Museum/9859/atom.html

1954 Donald Duck tells about Kites

KG (Kite Giveaway)

8 pages

Synopsis: The nephews are playing with their kites in dangerous ways and Donald has to reprimand them.

The story was a special order from three power companies (Florida Power and Light Company, Southern California Edison Company, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company). It was an instructional story about how to treat electric power in a safe way. Barks made slight alterations in some of the drawings allowing for the necessary use of the different company names.
