Funny animal comic book stories that take
place at nighttime? That sounds somewhat of a contradiction in
terms, because most stories naturally unfold in broad daylight.
Of course, Carl Barks' stories did not differ much from this 'convention',
but he did in fact make a few handfuls of stories which primarily
took place in the darkest hours of the day*. You may wonder why
the normally uneventful nighttime appealed to Barks, but in all
the chosen stories Donald is the starring character, and he can
stir things up and produce action anytime! In fact, you may
better wonder if Barks' wife Garé - who inked all the dark spots
from 1954 on - received extra pay for the considerable extra work...
* When you look back you may think you know some
stories that mostly took place at night (examples are FC0159
Ghost of the Grotto, FC0189 The Old Castle's
Secret, U$25 The Flying Dutchman, and U$63
House of Haunts), but they actually did not, and
therefore they are not included in this page.
SLEEP STORIES

|
WDCS056
'The Sleepwalker' - 1945 Synopsis:
Every night food is mysteriously vanishing
from Donald's fridge and the nephews decide to
solve the mystery.
Comments:
One of the most obvious topics for story
action during the nighttime would be Sleepwalking,
so Barks obliged by making Donald a sleepwalker.
And not only that; he is very determined in his
choice of whereabouts. He stays in the home and
enjoys huge meals night after night - while he is
still asleep...

|
WDCS101
'Nightmares' - 1949 Synopsis:
Donald is plagued by nightmares. His doctor
recommends he takes up some crocheting to steady
his nerves. Then Daisy comes for a visit...
Comments:
Another obvious choice for nighttime
activity is Nightmares. Again, Barks - and Donald
- oblige as the latter is having the most
frightful nightmares. NB.: This story is only
included because of its main topic; in reality,
Donald experiences his nightmares around the
clock...

JOB STORIES
|
 |
|
WDCS089
'Night Watchman Donald' - 1948 Synopsis:
Donald is starting at his new job as a night
watchman. But will he be able to stay awake?
Comments:
According to this story - and the next -
Donald is certainly not a night person.
Consequently, following his few rounds in the
warehouse is not overwhelmingly exciting, as he
is more prone to sleep through the night.

 |
|
WDCS231
The Wax Museum - 1959 Synopsis:
Donald is the new night watchman at the Wax
Museum. It would be an easy job if the figures
just wouldn't move around all the time...
Comments:
Sleeping on the job is Donald's primary
preference in this story, too, but there is a
distinct difference. In the museum he is soon
involved in heavy - and self-inflicted(!) -
actions.

MENACE STORIES
|
 |
|
FC0108
The Firebug - 1946 Synopsis:
Donald turns to pyromania after receiving a
bump to his head. Soon fires are blazing all over
Duckburg but is Donald the culprit?
Comments:
Of course, Barks' main plot called for the
actions to take place at nighttime, because this
is the best time for a pyromaniac to really enjoy
the menacing and colourful flames!

|
 |
|
Fineart
'Silent Night' - 1981 Synopsis:
Donald is walking around singing carols
before Christmas but his voice is not very well
liked. Especially not by neighbour Jones...
Comments:
Caroling is predominantly an American custom,
where children and adults walk from house to
house singing Christmas songs on December 24th.
Strangely, Donald seems to prefer the darkest
hours, when everybody prepares for bed, to
demonstrate his highly questionable singing voice...

TRAIN STORIES
|
 |
|
WDCS162
'Stationmaster Donald' - 1954 Synopsis:
As a stationmaster Donald is looking after a
consignment of very hungry baby turkeys. The
train robber Hairy Harry is just another
complication.
Comments:
After Donald has tried to care for the 10,000
turkeys through the night, he has to venture out
in the dark to check up on tracks and signals
only to be overpowered by the robber.
|
|
 |
|
WDCS195
'Train Training' - 1956 Synopsis:
Two trains are unwittingly roaring towards
each other and the nephews hear about it on TV.
They frantically try to find a solution before
the inevitable collision.
Comments:
For some reason Barks chose to let the
actions unfold during the nighttime, although
there was no real need to. The story could easily
have taken place during the day, especially as a
frightful blizzard makes the whole scenario
menacing, anyway.

NEIGHBOUR STORIES
|
 |
|
FG1946
Santa's Stormy Visit - 1946 Synopsis:
Donald manages a lighthouse that is pestered
by an albatross. Furthermore he has forgotten to
buy Christmas presents for his nephews...
Comments:
The albatross is attracted to the light from
the lighthouse during the night, because of the
pleasant warmth it generates.

|
 |
|
WDCS178
'The Noise Duel' - 1955 Synopsis:
Donald moves to a quieter neighbourhood in
order to get a good night's sleep. But it is not
that simple with an alpenhorn blower in the house...
Comments:
Donald would give anything to have one good
night's sleep, and when he finally is about to -
he stays up all night making a terrible racket in
order to keep his next door neighbour awake...

HALLOWEEN STORIES*
|
 |
|
DD26
Trick or Treat - 1952 Synopsis:
The nephews are collecting goodies for
Halloween but Donald has decided to tease them. A
real witch meddles in to fight the battle against
the stingy uncle...
Comments:
Barks was asked to transform the upcoming
cartoon short Trick or Treat into a
comic book story, and so he did - in his own
special way. See more HERE.

|
WDCS254
Jet Witch - 1961 Synopsis:
The Duckburgians decide to hold a
quiet Halloween this year but Donald doesn't hear
of the plan and makes it the worst Halloween
Duckburg has ever seen...
Comments:
We all know that when Donald really puts his
mind into it nothing can stop him! In this story
he manages to effectively scare the wits out of
all the Duckburgians, and he tops it by making
all the animals in the Zoo stampede into the city
streets. A night to remember...

|
. *
At the time when the stories premiered abroad the concept
of the American feast Halloween was not known everywhere.
This fact brought about some very surprising alterations
in several countries. In Denmark, for example, both
stories were altered to be about Shrovetide, another
feast incorporating children's trick and treating.
Trouble was, however, that this feast takes place during
the daytime! Thus all the outdoor panels had to be
heavily retouched!!!
