BRATS

  WDCS041 The Iron Pants - 1944

Synopsis:
Donald brags that he knows all the old snowball tricks so the nephews can't resist challenging him...

Comments:
Especially in the early years, Barks wrote many stories inspired and influenced by the often crazed tempo in the Disney animated shorts. The plots were basically the same; Donald and the nephews on a collision course. In this story things quickly get out of control as retaliations fly back and forth. At one point the nephews actually hurt Donald by pointing a lit blowtorch at his rear end!

  WDCS043 Three Dirty Little Ducks - 1944

Synopsis:
The nephews have turned into soap haters but Donald does not concur. Off to the bath...

Comments:
Cleanliness is one of the top priorities for any responsible parent, so Donald is distraught when his nephews suddenly are not compliant anymore. They adhere to their motto Always Alert to Save Our Dirt. This story takes place indoors and during summertime (see the last story for comparison).

  WDCS060 'Under Observation' - 1945

Synopsis:
Donald invents a radar with a screen which allows him to see where the nephews are going. But the radar has its flaws...

Comments:
The nephews repeatedly try to shirk from their chores, but Donald is on to them. In the end they play a dirty trick on their uncle by purposely luring him into a tent where he is grossly molested by ruthless monkeys.
This was by far not the only time the nephews played dirty. Other examples: In WDCS071 'Dishonest Swimming' Louie made a bet with Donald that he could swim a certain stretch the fastest. En route the three nephews, unseen by Donald, replaced each other in order to maintain the endurance needed to win the bet. And in WDCS112 'Rip van Winkle' the nephews played a cruel joke on their uncle by luring him into believing that he had slept for 40 years just to get him to return to their home.

  WDCS064 'The Trouble with Candy' - 1946

Synopsis:
Donald's New Year's resolution is to keep his temper. How hard can that be?

Comments:
Grave conflicts can arise from the oddest reasons. As soon as the nephews learn that Donald has vowed never to get angry again, they immediately begin to pester him!
A similar thing happened in WDCS077 'Giant Garden Bugs', in which the nephews disguised themselves as giant beetles in order to tease Donald.

  WDCS079 'Picnic Panic' - 1947

Synopsis:
Donald and Daisy go out for a picnic and the nephews want to join them instead of going to school. But the answer is No! so they decide to ruin the picnic instead!

Comments:
The nephews are real nuisances in this story in which Donald only tries to have some quality time with his girlfriend. In fact, the nephews decide to ruin the adults' picnic by completely destroying both the surroundings and the food. When Donald at long last fights back the passions run high - ruining both parties.

  WDCS092 'The Juvenile Professor' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald is scolded by a professor in child psychology who states that children are to develop at their own pace.

Comments:
Of course it is the responsibility of all parents to raise their kids, but in this story the nephews are left totally to themselves by Donald who is influenced by a foolish professor who apparently follows a motto of Everything is Allowed. The nephews have no hesitation following the dubious guidance - or lack of same...

  WDCS072 'Railriding Shirkers' - 1946

Synopsis:
The nephews try to play hooky from school while Donald is at work. But it is not nearly as easy as they thought!

Comments:
This is a story about cheating, but it is certainly also a story about morals. We follow the nephews' increasingly more desperate attempts to stay out of Donald's way so he won't discover that they are playing hooky. As time goes by they sink deeper and deeper into a quagmire of bad experiences 'just' because they wanted a day off. Now, as a responsible parent, Donald reacts in the proper way by bringing them to understand the errors of their ways.
This is not the only time the nephews played hooky in Barks' stories. It also happened in WDCS100 'Truant Officer', WDCS133 'Truant Officer Troubles', and WDCS169 'Houseboat Hooky'.

  WDCS127 'April Foolers' - 1951

Synopsis:
The nephews are trying their best to make a sucker out of Donald on April Fools' Day but they are not very successful.

Comments:
How fulfilling is it when you try to tease someone, and he does not even notice your efforts? This is Barks' basic plot. The nephews repeatedly play tricks on their uncle but the actions all go by unnoticed by Donald who even benefits from the pranks. At the end of the day he still has no clue that his nephews have tried to trick him. On the contrary, he has had a perfect day!
In WDCS105 'Dubious Echoes' the nephews also tried to fool Donald - this time into believing that a certain glen had a terrific echo. But Donald saw through their charade that time.

  WDCS154 'Real Estate War' - 1953

Synopsis:
Donald is the realtor for the old Quackly Place which is also a playground for the nephews. They have to prevent Donald from selling...

Comments:
The nephews tirelessly and cunningly try to sour the deal. They do so by physically trying to convince a potential buyer that the house is nothing but a ruin. Still, they end up with egg on their faces, because the buyer's intention was to remodel the house into a children's playground...

WDCS184 'To Bathe or Not to Bathe' - 1955

Synopsis:
The nephews swear that they will never again tarnish their bodies with soap. Donald does not agree. A battle of strong wills is about to begin!

Comments:
Donald commands the nephews to take a much needed bath but they refuse vigorously. This story is remindful of the second story (see above) but the scenario is quite different; this time the actions take place outdoors and during winter.
