Carl Barks did not make many comic book stories in which islands were the central locations, but a few did emerge from his pen. Most of them are presented here in chronological order.

  U$04 'Menehune Island' - 1953

Synopsis:
Scrooge buys a volcanic island where he intends to hide his money. But The Beagle Boys learn about his plans!

Comments:
It is hardly a coincidence that one of Barks' first adventure stories from an island location was this one from Hawaii. At the time he was dating Garé, who was to become his third wife the following year, and she was born and raised in Hawaii. Her future husband got many valuable pointers from her as for the islands' folklore and environment. Pointers which all contributed greatly to the story's overall factuality.

  U$08 'Stoneray Island' - 1954

Synopsis:
Scrooge finds an S.O.S. message - someone on an unknown island seeks help. He quickly takes off in the hope of earning a bundle on the rescue expedition...

Comments:
Scrooge arrives to the island with Donald and the nephews, and it quickly proves to be a very curious spot. The island is teeming with animals - but they are all made of stone! Later the ducks find a collection of the Beagle Boys - also made of stone! The mysterious secret lies in the middle of the island, and as the ducks progress they also begin to transform into stone...

  U$16 Back to Long Ago! - 1956

Synopsis:
Scrooge is hypnotized and learns that in a former life he was a Spanish captain who hid a treasure chest on a certain island. He rushes off to find it...

Comments:
The treasure-seeking part of the story sounds familiar, eh? The first Donald Duck story Barks made (with colleague Jack Hannah), FC0009 Pirate Gold, carried the same basic plot of finding an ancient, hidden treasure by way of a map. But the endings are certainly quite different; in Pirate Gold Donald found a great treasure, but in this story he finds - rotten potatos...

CID 'Black Pearl Island' - 1957

Synopsis:
Scrooge travels with Donald and the nephews to a distant tropical island to fish for black pearls but the island is not about to give them up...

Comments:
In reality, the 5 Ducks are marooned, unable to get off the island. Still, this 'tiny' mishap does not influence Scrooge's interest in collecting pearls; the longer they stay the bigger his collection...

  WDCS226 'Island on the Move' - 1959

Synopsis:
Scrooge claims a previously uncharted island. He might make a profit, if only the island wouldn't move...

Comments:
As it turns out it is a floating island, which, by the force of currants and winds, travels across the ocean bumping into things! This strange 'behaviour' also causes the island to diminish until it can be contained in a barrel...

  U$29 Island in the Sky - 1960

Synopsis:
Scrooge decides to hide all his money on an asteroid far away from thieves. But the asteroid is inhabited...

Comments:
Well, Barks titled his story as if an island was the location, but in fact we are treated to a number of asteroids, which are floating around in the asteroid belt as - islands. The main story is tied(!) between two asteroids - a barren and a fruitful one - which the ducks connect with a rope enabling the unfortunate barren-world Indians to climb over to the fruitful asteroid.

WDCS235 Want to Buy an Island? - 1960

Synopsis:
The nephews are playing businessmen and they draw a deed for an imaginary island. Later on, Donald accidentally gets hold of it and he thinks it is genuine...

Comments:
Donald has a secret dream of actually owning a tropical island, and in this story it seems that his wish is about to come through at last.
In an earlier story, WDCS211 'The Coconutty Story', Donald had the same dream, and there he arrived on an island paradise, although it did, at first, start as an April Fool's Day joke administered by the nephews.

  FC1184 Brain-Strain - 1961

Synopsis:
Gyro and Donald are marooned on a desolate island. Will Gyro be able to invent them back to civilization without his usual tools?

Comments:
The two are marooned due to Donald's poor boatmanship, and it gets worse when they try to leave the island. Gyro is doing everything right, but Donald's foolish actions repeatedly capsize the rescue project.
In U$35 Fast Away Castaway Gyro ventured out on his own and marooned himself on a desolate island in an attempt to try out his newest invention -
a survival kit for castaways. One of the necessities was a small machine that could transform ordinary sand to all sorts of delicious food items...

  U$40 Oddball Odyssey - 1963

Synopsis:

Magica de Spell lures Scrooge to her hide-out in order to steal the Number One Dime but luckily Donald and the nephews are standing by...

Comments:
Magica's normal hideout is on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in Italy, but in order to fool Scrooge she has set up 'camp' on nothing less than the fabled goddess and sorceress Circe's island, Aeaea, known from Greek mythology. Here she has found Circe's secret cave filled with mystic herbs, powerful potions - and Circe's magic wand, which Magica immediately tries out on the unsuspecting ducks...

U$45 Isle of the Golden Geese - 1963

Synopsis:
Scrooge finds a golden egg in a regular egg carton. He decides to find the supplier of such interesting eggs...

Comments:
The island (or Isle as it is sometimes called in English) seems to be under the jurisdiction of the Chilean government thus placing it in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean.
In MOC41 Race to the South Seas Scrooge voluntarily marooned himself on an island in the same waters, whereupon Donald and Gladstone tried to track him down. But Scrooge refused to be rescued; he loved his island...
