Carl Barks made a number of stories in which Donald Duck acted as a guard. Of course, he was always a guardian for his nephews and would be a self-appointed guard to Daisy whenever Gladstone was in the vicinity, but he also took paid jobs as an official guard in many different fields. This page presents you to a collection of those in alphabetical order.

BORDER PATROLMAN

  WDCS197 'Desert Patrol' - 1957

Synopsis:
Donald takes on a new job as a border patrolman but the smugglers are outwitting him. Luckily, the nephews are more cunning!

Comments:
It is typical for all the paid guard jobs Donald performs, that he receives neither general information nor basic training, which is, in turn, a contributing factor to his problems. In this story he is completely on his own without any instructions or even an idea of the required expectations. Result: the smugglers have a field day.

COAST GUARD

  WDCS094 'Beautiful Smugglers' - 1948

Synopsis:
Donald is a coast guard and it is his job to patrol the bay for smugglers. But they do not find Donald that hard to fool...

Comments:
Again, Donald's destiny is to be tricked by cunning smugglers, but at least this time they look alluring as well. Also, the scenery has switched from desert sand to beach sand. And, as usual, the nephews help Donald catch all the criminals without him even knowing it...

DOG-SITTER

  WDCS238 The Dog-sitter - 1960

Synopsis:
Donald is babysitting a sly dog whose only thought is to get out of the house.

Comments:
From the start Donald is merely a stand-in for his nephews who had been hired to look after the dog, but they had to leave. So Donald takes over, and soon the seemingly easy dog-sitting job escalates from bad to worse.

LIFEGUARD

  WDCS276 Beach Boy - 1963

Synopsis:
Donald is a lifeguard at the beach but his merits are overshadowed by the Junior Woodchucks hound. He decides to get even by making it flunk a JW test.

Comments:
Donald is doing his cozy job surprisingly well (as a duck takes to water...), but, not surprisingly, self-inflicted problems tower up, when he tries to meddle in what he should have stayed out.
This was also the case in WDCS033 'The Lifeguard', in which Donald tries to lure a nice lady-duck and his nephews into thinking that he is a heroic figure who can battle a shark.

LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER

  FG1946 Santa's Stormy Visit - 1946

Synopsis:
Donald manages a lighthouse that is pestered by an albatross. Furthermore he has forgotten to buy Christmas presents for his nephews...

Comments:
Donald faithfully tends to his responsible job, although he is required to work at night. This main disadvantage is not a problem for him, as it would be later on when he worked as a night watchman! A contributory reason for Donald's awareness is that he is up against a formidable adversary.

NIGHT WATCHMAN

  WDCS231 The Wax Museum - 1959

Synopsis:
Donald is the new night watchman at the Wax Museum. It would be an easy job if the figures just wouldn't move around all the time...

Comments:
But Donald's most pressing problem is that he is required to stay awake in the job(!), when he most of all wants a good night's sleep. The nephews try to make Donald alert by staging mysterious events to keep him awake.
In WDCS089 'Sleepy Night Watchman' Donald has the very same sleep 'disorder', and the nephews, again, desperately try to bail him out by keeping him awake.

MUSEUM GUARD

  FC0408 The Golden Helmet - 1952

Synopsis:
He who bears The Golden Helmet can call himself King of North America. Many are interested. Including Donald!

Comments:
Although Donald functions as a daytime watchman in the museum, he has trouble staying bright-eyed and bushy-tailed in what he sees as a dreary job.
He was considerably more alert when he, in FC0223 Lost in the Andes, is a janitor at The Duckburg Museum and discovers that a square rock from Peru in fact is an egg.

RANGER

  WDCS266 Stalwart Ranger - 1962

Synopsis:
Donald is a ranger in Duckburg's forest service. One day he is sent out to count wild sheep. But can he stay awake?

Comments:
Although he does not know the first thing about 'ranging', Donald is confident that he does a good job. Well, at least he gets to be admired by numerous romantic lady-ducks in the end!
In VP1 Camp Counselor Donald becomes quite aware of his shortcomings in a similar job, as he is chased by an eagle, a bearskin(!), and a peaceful pig which the nephews have disguised as a wild boar...

TRUANT OFFICER

  WDCS100 'Truant Officer' - 1949

Synopsis:
Donald is the new truant officer and his most important task is to round up his shirking nephews!

Comments:
As it was the case with this and other stories on this page, Barks took the basic idea from some of the cartoons he made when at the Disney Studios (see more
HERE).
The concept of Truant Officer (or Attendance Officer or Truancy Officer) is a special American phenomenon, which may have readers outside the USA a bit puzzled. The job simply implies an official employed by a public school system, who investigates unauthorized absences from school.

EXTRA

Donald has (mis)managed numerous jobs for Uncle Scrooge through time, and several of them were even paid guard jobs. Here are three very diverse examples:

FC0367 Christmas for Shacktown - 1952

Synopsis:
Scrooge's money falls down an almost bottomless pit and all seems lost. Now for the recovery of the money...

Comments:
Donald arranges a cushy job as a rat catcher in the Money Bin. He brings in both the rat and the pursuing cat and collects 10 dollars for his 'trouble'.

FC0386 Only a Poor Old Man - 1952

Synopsis:
Scrooge tries to hide his money in a far-away lake so The Beagle Boys can't find it. But it is not that easy...

Comments:
Donald is hired as a money guard (and handyman in general) at the princely sum of 30 cents an hour - and he really has to work for his wages.

WDCS252 Mr. Private Eye - 1961

Synopsis:
Donald sees himself as a brilliant detective and does not hesitate to take a job protecting the priceless Cat's-Eye Opal.

Comments:
Scrooge hires Donald (via Duckburg's Mayor) as guardian of the precious gemstone. No salary is mentioned, but undoubtedly Donald comes cheap.
