Carl Barks provided his main comic book characters with a varied wardrobe. Not that each  individual has a closet full of clothes. In fact, each one normally wears just one set of clothes - but they all wear very diverse types of garments from each other. These designs help to contribute to our understanding of their characters. Scrooge would not look the part if he was missing his rummage sale coat, and Daisy would not be as feminine if she was not wearing her puffy sleeves.

This page looks at the clothes that the primary characters wear. A similar page covering their headgear can be seen HERE.

THE BASIC APPEARANCES
Here we will look at Barks' major characters. Note that the colours of their clothes are not always mentioned, because they often change from country to country.

Donald Duck
Donald wears a sailor's jacket - blue in the cartoons and black in the comics. It has a square back collar. The jacket has trimmings in a different colour and has either 4 small or 2 big yellow buttons, which are purely ornamental. Donald also wears a red bow tie.

The Nephews
The boys wear simple identical, black turtleneck sweaters. In WDCS061 it was revealed that the sweaters have pockets.
The normally plain-looking nephews are much more elaborately dressed when they put on their Junior Woodchucks' uniforms with plenty of ornaments and medals.

Daisy Duck
None of Barks' ducks wear trousers or skirts, but it seems as if the ladies have some kind of
frilly feathers around their hips that resemble the lacy ruffles of old-fashioned bloomers. Daisy is a dresser; a tight little blouse with short, puffy sleeves is her trademark.

Scrooge McDuck
The old miser wears a wool broadcloth coat bought at a rummage sale in Scotland in 1902. The coat has cuffs and what seems to be a padded lapel. Below the lapel is one button. The purpose is uncertain, especially because it is not at all clear how Scrooge actually opens his coat.

Grandma Duck
She wears a turtleneck-like blouse with ruffles, and it has - as the only duck character's - a row of buttons for opening. She underlines her age by wearing an old-fashioned shawl tied in a knot in front.

Gyro Gearloose
One of the few characters in the duck universe who dresses like a human: shirt, trousers and shoes. The shirt is somewhat enigmatic, though, because it has only one button and no apparent openings, so it will forever be a secret how Gyro takes off his shirt. His dress is completed by a waistcoat, which he wears year round.

Gladstone Gander
The Luckster is a smart dresser wearing a soft hat, an open collared jacket, a bow tie and spats. He also wears a white shirt, that has to be very short in body-length, because it never shows beneath his jacket line!

Magica de Spell
The dark lady wears a gown - black of course - and it seems to be the only one in the duck universe. It has an open, square-shaped neck, a tail hole and wavy trimmings at the bottom.

The Beagle Boys
Strangely, the lazy, never-working gang wear typical workmen's clothes; cap, sweater, trousers and shoes. And they normally seem to fool everyone into believing that they are indeed good, upstanding guys despite their burglars' masks and prison number signs! The identical sweaters have a round neck and are probably knitwear. The Boys must have an endless supply of these garments, because we never see a sweater with a patch.

Flintheart Glomgold
Scrooge's opponent wears an open collared black jacket of undetermined fabric. He also wears a white shirt and a smart neckerchief.

THE DRESSY APPEARANCES
This is a vast subject, because Barks used endless types of clothing for his numerous characters. Therefore the following examples concentrate on Donald's different outfits whether it be job clothes or leisure time garments, but you will also find examples from Scrooge's wardrobe. Quite surprising, really, because we all just visualize Scrooge in his red coat, but he has been known to dress up in some very different costumes through time.
