MONEY BIN ATTACKS

  WDCS134 'The Beagle Boys Cannon' - 1951

Synopsis:
Scrooge thinks a cannon he once bought will protect his money from the Beagle Boys. Will his plans backfire?

Comments:
In this his first story with the Boys Barks merely uses them as plot line bogeys, until they finally emerge in graphic form in the last panel as no more than casual passersby when Scrooge's office bin has broken open.

  WDCS135 'Cold Cash' - 1951

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews fill the new Money Bin with water to prevent the Beagle Boys from digging their way in, but a drop in the temperature stops their plan cold!

Comments:
In Barks' very next story he used the Boys again, and this time they are portrayed rather more determined. But, again, they just end up with mere 'spoils' floating out of the Bin.

  FC0386 Only a Poor Old Man - 1952

Synopsis:
Scrooge tries to hide his money in a far-away lake so the Beagle Boys can't find it. But it is not that easy...

Comments:
Why tamper with a basic plan of digging their way into the Bin, when it had not worked previously, the Boys seem to have said, so they prepare to break through the Bin via their neighbouring construction, instead. Still, Scrooge manages to foil them in a big way, as they unwittingly transport all of his money away - on their own trucks!

  U$21 The Money Well - 1958

Synopsis:
The Beagle Boys arrange to suck the money out of the Money Bin but luckily the nephews discover an old tunnel leading from the tank to the river bank.

Comments:
Presumably, the former experience was so traumatic for the Boys that they did not dare to approach the Bin for the next 6 years. Now they emerge with yet another plan of emptying the Bin, this time using a rig on the neighbouring grounds to slant drill their way up under the Bin. Again, their fine plan is foiled by Scrooge, who succeeds in secretly transporting his money to safety first.

  U$28 The 'Paul Bunyan' Machine - 1960

Synopsis:
The Beagle Boys construct a giant chopping machine to open the Money Bin. Scrooge mails his money to the far woods but the crooks are at his heels...

Comments:
Now the Boys have become very sophisticated in their modus operandi; they use their own specially constructed machinery in their attempt to conquer the Bin! They construct a giant vehicle capable of chopping its way through the Bin walls, and, taught by experience, they have already constructed an X-ray machine which can look inside the Bin and make sure that Scrooge is not transporting his money away...

  U$33 Billions in the Hole - 1961

Synopsis:
Using an atom subtracter that can shrink objects drastically, the Beagle Boys shrink the Money Bin. It becomes so small an ant carries it off...

Comments:
The Boys rapidly move from Tech to High-Tech; in this story's attack on the Bin they have invented an atom subtracter, that would have been certain to earn them a Nobel prize!!! But what are a few million dollars when you have your heart set on, literally, pocketing a full money bin??? This time the Boys' plan is foiled by some of Nature's tiniest creatures - ants. What a bummer...

  U$35 Gift Lion - 1961

Synopsis:
An admirer offers Scrooge a trained lion to guard the Money Bin. But the admirer and the lion are both Beagle Boys!

Comments:
'Now then, maybe we could simply bluff our way into the Money Bin instead
', the Boys may have reasoned in this story. At least, this is exactly what they do; one comes disguised as a game hunter from Africa, and the other - lo and behold - as a lion!!! Leaving the 'lion' as a present for Scrooge (who can resist a free gift?) the Boys return during the night only to discover that Scrooge has exchanged their brother for a real lion...

  U$38 The Unsafe Safe - 1962

Synopsis:
Scrooge's technicians have invented unbreakable glass but what can it be used for? Well, the Money Bin could be encased in it...

Comments:
Scrooge has encased the safe in his Money Bin in such a way that he loosens up on security. So the Boys march in! Three times they succeed in blowing up massive amounts of explosives, but the safe remains unharmed! At long last the Boys are marched out by a policeman telling them that 'a little old lady across the street has complained about the noise' ...

U$42 The Case of the Sticky Money - 1963

Synopsis:
Scrooge discovers that the Beagle Boys suddenly have money to burn. In fact, so much money that it must come from his Money Bin. But how?

Comments:
This time the Boys have constructed an ingenious system of small belt-driven vehicles that can make their way inside through the ventilation system and bring out the money little by little. Had the Boys only contended themselves with minor 'withdrawals' instead of flaunting their massive, ill-gotten wealth, they probably could have lived on this steady income for the rest of their lives...

U$51 How Green Was My Lettuce - 1964

Synopsis:
The Money Bin has been undermined by gophers so Scrooge's money has to be moved immediately. But how does one get past the cunning Beagle Boys?

Comments:
The angle of incidence this time seems to have been 'Why work hard getting access to the Bin, when others can do it for you?'. So the Boys train hordes of gophers to simply undermine the Bin making it slide to rest on their property next door! Still, Scrooge is never fooled for long; as he had done several times before, he again manages to slip away with his money under the Boys' noses...

  U$58 The Giant Robot Robbers - 1965

Synopsis:
Duckburg has invested in giant robots that can do many chores. The Beagle Boys commandeer them to open the Money Bin...

Comments:
Nothing like a direct approach! When the Boys see the giant robots they take charge and quickly set to work opening the Bin and carrying the loot away in oversized buckets. But everybody has a weak point, and the Boys' downfall this time is that one of them has an uncontrollable fondness for prunes, which makes him leave his robot. Soon after all robots are in the right hands again. Off to rehabilitation prison, guys...

  U$63 House of Haunts - 1966

Synopsis:
Scrooge hid all his money in an eerie old castle, but has now forgotten where he put it. But the Beagle Boys know!

Comments:
Back from one year's rehabilitation!!! The Boys venture out on their last attack on the cursed Bin full of hope, because they have been studying hard in prison; one of the Boys puts his new skills as Doctor of Metallurgy and Bachelor of Electropyrotechnology into practice by operating a Super Laser Ray Bank Melter (no less) that quickly and elegantly split open the side of the Bin. And Scrooge? He is mostly amused, because he has already - as usual - transferred his money to another location. So, all is back to (ab)normal...
