Barks was truly a master when it came to drawing characters as silhouettes. Although silhouettes are by definition nothing but large one-coloured surfaces, he managed to make them both recognizable and expressive to an extent that was never seen before in comic books. He also realized that a silhouette is not just a black shape on a light background. It might be a light surface on a dark area as well! Finally, Barks was fully aware of the dramatic effect that silhouettes can have and he used them to the fullest advantage throughout the years.

Light silhouettes? Of course, when the events take place at night... |
In U$69 the silhouettes even take an active part in the story. |
