Carl Barks wrote several comic book stories in which muscles - or even brute force - were an important part of the characters' attributes. We have witnessed Uncle Scrooge digging hard for gold in the Yukon, and Donald Duck climbing Old Demontooth. We have also met creatures with an excessive amount of muscles such as dragons and sea serpents. But this page will concentrate on showing you Barks' more inventive stories in which muscles in some form play an important part in the plots.

FC0062 Mystery of the Swamp - 1945

Synopsis:
Donald and the nephews travel to an unexplored swamp just to show their grit. They meet a strange tribe and decide to bring one of the inhabitants back home to prove that they have been in the area.

Comments:
The tribe consists of gnomelike beings called Gneezles. They are in tune with nature and as such they have acquired special abilities, one of which is incredible strength that is achieved by immense swelling. Donald is forced to go a round with Gnapoleon who is named The Swellin'est Sweller That Ever Swelt! He has no difficulty beating Donald with a technique that seems related to many martial arts - turning the opponent's force against himself.

WDCS069 - 1946

Synopsis:
Daisy is fascinated by strong men and Donald has to start building up some muscles.

Comments:
Although Barks wrote more stories in which Donald uses his muscle power, this is the only one in which Donald actively tries to upgrade his physique. Still, his nephews have to help him convince Daisy that he has turned into a he-man by staging a few pseudo power events.

WDCS107 - 1949

Synopsis:
The nephews read nonsense about a super snooper and Donald gets angry. But he accidentally acquires super powers himself...

Comments:
Accidentally, Donald drinks a potion that is supposed to make rats as strong as horses, and soon he enjoys having supernatural powers that even come in handy on a few occasions. It is easy to see that Barks wrote the story as a satire on the then recent introduction of new superheroes in a variety of other comic books.

WDCS145 - 1952

Synopsis:
The nephews are playing with a completely harmless hypnotizer gun but Donald thinks it's real. Perhaps it is?

Comments:
Again, Donald has super powers for a brief period. This time he is a collector for Scrooge, and he visits a muscular debtor. Here the gun is used on Donald to make him act like a gorilla giving him enough strength to subdue the man. Barks has a wonderful twist to the main plot of the story; the gun which is supposed to have hypnotic powers is in fact absolutely harmless - unless you are exceptionally gullible...

U$13 Land Beneath the Ground - 1956

Synopsis:
Scrooge digs a tunnel under his Money Bin to ensure that the ground is solid. Here he encounters Terry Fermy where the inhabitants make earthquakes...

Comments:
When Barks tried to think of a type of beings to inhabit the underground world, he first thought of giant lizards and dragons, but he decided to go for round and jolly looking characters instead. They are not unlike a swelling gneezle in appearance, and they even perform their acts in the same basic way. However, in this case the characters use their great numbers in order to 'rock' the world...

FC1184 Mighty but Miserable - 1961

Synopsis:
Gyro invents a special power box but it only brings him bad luck until he is able to prevent a flood by using his super powers.

Comments:
Lo and behold! One of the main characters least likely to be seen with super powers must be Gyro Gearloose. But he is an inventor, so why not invent a gadget that makes him a he-man for helpful purposes? He chases the Beagle Boys out of town and stops a leak in a dam, but he is not able to control his new-gotten powers and becomes a menace to his friends. Luckily, he is soon back to normal...

WDCS292 Instant Hercules - 1965

Synopsis:
Donald runs a booming diving and salvation business until one day he encounters a sea monster...

Comments:
On a diving mission in the Aegean Sea, Donald is supposed to find an ancient Greek sunken vessel. He uncovers a giant sea monster and an amphora containing a strange liquid. Upon drinking the bronze-age cola Donald acquires supernatural powers, and he is able to lick the monster.

EXTRA
In WDCS222 from 1959 Barks wrote a story where Donald had a moving job. One of his many tasks was to remove a number of animals from a zoo. Now, do we not all recall the conniving mynah bird, that boasted of its phenomenal muscle powers - as long as it received a suitable number of prunes? Unfortunately for the bird its powers were all in its mind...
