The most important and rewarding of
Carl Barks' comic book abilities was his unparalleled imagination.
It was used eloquently in all aspects of the creative process
from the first stage of dreaming up a plot line to the last stage
of drawing the panels. One of Barks' 'trademarks' was his almost
uncanny ability to create all sorts of characters down to the
most obscure secondary ones that would stick in your mind mainly
because of their inventive and often unusual appearances. Some of
these characters and figures stood out as being even more
memorable - namely the ones that Barks invented chiefly for fun.
The freaky ones. A character can look freaky in different ways
from almost plain looking individuals to sheer monstrosities, but
Barks always managed to impart them with interesting and
disarming appearances.
When you have browsed the examples (they have been loosely
divided into two main groups in the sub-pages) you will probably
be surprised to realize how a great deal of the freaky creations
do not seem that strange to you after all. This is because you
have gotten used to them, but they are
still very strange!
