Fishing!
The very word starts many of us dreaming of quiet mornings
sitting by a gurgling creek inhaling the fresh air, or sitting in
the warmth of the sun in a boat on a tranquil lake breathing life-giving
ozone. In either case equipped with our favourite fishing rod,
hot coffee and endless patience. That is what fishing is all
about.
BUT NOT IN THE DUCK UNIVERSE! Carl Barks wrote a number of comic
book stories in which the act (or art, some may argue) of fishing
played an important part. Fishing could be the main plot, an
underlying theme, or just the mechanism that triggered the events.
Barks seemed to have had endless ideas on how to vary the theme;
no two fishing stories are even remotely alike, and he dreamt up
fantastic plots in which fishing in totally different ways was
the backbone of the stories.
On this page you will be treated to 10 of these stories in
chronological order. Most of them have Donald Duck as the angler,
because, if Donald ever had a favourite pastime, it probably was
fishing. Despite his continuous bad experiences...

WDCS066
- 1946 Synopsis:
Donald claims to be an expert on ice fishing
but he immediately gets into trouble with a large
fish. Perhaps dynamite is the solution?
Comments:
Donald sees himself as a master angler but
his temper launches a veritable vendetta against
a stubborn fish that refuses to get caught.
Donald's attempts to conquer the uncooperative
fish rapidly become increasingly more insane,
until it is finally caught by the nephews in a
normal and straightforward manner.

WDCS076
- 1947 Synopsis:
Donald wants to rise bright and early to go
fishing, but a stray cat ensures that he doesn't
get his sleep...
Comments:
Donald and the nephews seem to be competent
anglers, but after a sleepless night Donald
sleeps all day at the fishing spot, while the
fully rested nephews catch an abundance of fish.
This unbearable defeat causes Donald to chase the
cat out of the county.

Only a Poor Old Man - 1952 Synopsis:
Scrooge tries to hide his money in a far-away
lake so The Beagle Boys can't find it. But it is
not that easy...
Comments:
In this story Scrooge is fishing - for money.
After hiding his vast fortune under water he gets
the urge to take a money bath, and he builds a
small money island in the middle of the lake.
In the end, Donald and the nephews are invited to
'fish' for their salary using fishing rods and
lines attached to purses...

WDCS153
- 1953 Synopsis:
Gyro is breeding worms that drag fish out of
the water. Donald is an avid angler. Now for some
serious fishing...
Comments:
Donald only catches a few small fish and he
quickly blames his worms. But Gyro has trained
special worms that can bring in fish by
themselves. As usual, Donald neglects to heed
sound advice - he should not to use too many
worms at a time. Soon the lake is swarming with
fish-catching worms...

WDCS167
- 1954 Synopsis:
Donald is checking on how to catch the
biggest salmon in a contest in order to win a
Snobmobile. But Gladstone is checking in, too...
Comments:
Finally, a bit of luck for Donald; he
immediately hooks the biggest salmon in the
entire lake (Yow, what have I hooked - a
Submarine?). Then the story goes on to show
how difficult it is to actually land it...

Land of the Pygmy Indians - 1957 Synopsis:
Scrooge longs for some peace and quiet so he
buys a large, remote area to enjoy its
tranquillity. But the land is inhabited...
Comments:
It is said that it is every angler's dream
to catch a fish of enormous proportions, and in
this story Donald gets more than he has bargained
for - a gigantic sturgeon! Although it is an open
question as to who is chasing who in the
beginning, Donald succeeds in landing the monster
in the end.
In two earlier stories Donald encountered similar
large sea animals that took control over him. In WDCS097
he was abducted by an oyster, and in WDCS177
he was seen as bait for a gigantic shark!

WDCS218
- 1958 Synopsis:
Donald sees an opportunity to earn some easy
money by delivering porpoises to the Seashow
Aquarium. But he has to catch them first!
Comments:
In the Seashow Aquarium Donald sees
porpoises worth a lot of money. He decides to
catch some to sell to the Seashow without
realizing that their porpoises are trained.
Catching wild ones in nature is not that easy!
Barks used a similar plot two years earlier in WDCS193
where Donald managed to catch a whale! Then he
did not realize how much seafood he would have to
catch just to keep the whale alive...

U$25
The Flying Dutchman - 1959 Synopsis:
Scrooge goes hunting for a mysterious gold-laden
ship which sails without a crew. Donald tags
along with his fishing rod...

Donald's fixation with fishing goes through
the whole story as a running gag, but at one
point his hook happens to turn over a map with
dire results. Still, Donald keeps on fishing...

 |
WDCS223
- 1959 Synopsis:
The nephews have been building kites all
winter long and now - on the first spring day -
they want to try them out. Donald is more
interested in fishing...
Comments:
At this late point in his comic book career
Barks returns to a farcical plot in which gag
after gag is unleashed. The basic story is that
the nephews constantly get their stock of new
kites destroyed by Donald whose only thoughts are
on fishing...

WDCS247
The Madcap Mariner - 1961 Synopsis:
Donald is captain on Scrooge's schooner in a
race to win a prize for the biggest fish. And
Scrooge has a secret device on board!
Comments:

codfish and he is in the right place for the task.
The trouble is that there are neither fishing
gear nor bait aboard the ship. But, as usual,
Barks has a surprising solution to the problem...

BONUS |
 Well,
you might say, are there no ordinary fishing
stories taking place in the duck universe? Sure, but then
you have to turn to Gyro Gearloose who was once on a
fishing trip amongst a crowd of other anglers (U$17
'Tricky Tackle'). He caught so many fish that he
was accused of using one of his inventions, but he was
not. He was just having a good time - and a lot of luck.
There's a typical Barks twist for you...
