In 1939 a marketing genius from the
Walt Disney Corporation, Herman 'Kay' Kamen, and Western
Publishing's editor Eleanor Packer started the comic book series
called Four Color (FC for short). The name comes from the four
colour process of printing. It contained a variety of Donald Duck
newspaper strip material and was published irregularly. The FC
magazine was a so-called One Shot which means that each issue had
a different title. The series became an instant success but it
was obvious from the start that the Disney name and the recycled
newspaper strips were not enough to continue selling the magazine
so Western began to develop new stories. They started to employ
various artists to draw hundreds of different features and the
magazine was well received by the readers.
Carl Barks started his comic book career in the FC series with #9
in 1942 and he continued contributing until #1267 in 1961 by
which time he had written and drawn numerous short stories and
long adventure stories. Parallel to this feat he also wrote
hundreds of stories for Walt Disney Comics and Stories (WDCS),
another magazine that was established by the same creative duo
that had started FC.
Many of Disney's cartoon characters were also recurring characters in the FC magazine. |
The characters from several of Disney's cartoon feature films were also represented. |
Western also adapted many of Disney's real feature films to the FC series. |
Barks wrote and drew many of his best adventure stories for the series. |
Western also made two special series titled 'Grandma
Duck's Farm Friends' and 'Daisy Duck's Diary'
featuring stories with the two ladies. |
At the end of his career at Western Barks
wrote and drew a few longer comic book stories (5 to 10
pages) solely with his character Gyro Gearloose. |
