Peggy Phyllis (1923-1963) was Carl
Barks' firstborn daughter. She was married to a salmon hatchery
manager at Puget Sound in Washington State, but in the prime of
her life she fell tragically ill and died from lung cancer
leaving her husband and three children behind. During the last
years of her life Peggy periodically mailed her father ideas for
Disney duck stories in the hopes that he might be interested in
them, and a few of them were indeed published (see more HERE). This page
presents for the first time a small collection of the more or
less sketchy ideas - representing different levels of completion
- which her father received. As you will discover, Peggy often
used real life references in her suggestions, which may at first
glance seem a bit mystifying if you are not familiar with the
names and places.
Peggy's handwriting is fairly easy to read (despite the, by now,
frail pencil strokes on slightly withered paper), but it has been
decided to accompany the examples with full transcripts 'as is'
of the original, selected letters, which are in turn only
reproduced in parts.
One of the envelopes from Peggy. Her father has added a filing comment. |

There is a large reward for anyone finding the guns Captain Jack used in the Modoc Indian War. He hid them in one of the caves. They believe it's in Catacomb Cave with its endless passages + deep holes. Maybe the ducks could come upon a spot in the wilderness like the Oregon Vortex or Confusion Hill like I sending you some propaganda on. It's fun to visit but could be really fun if these spots were found away from anywhere. Another true story is about a peculiar gray black stone which come from a meteorite which burst + fell on one of the islands in the Pacific. They are almost impossible to find due to natives + usual jungle hazards but 7 stones were brought out + all 7 men who possess them became millionaires within a year or two. There is a colony of "Lemures" at the foot of Mt. Shasta. They are supposed to have built a city using so much gold that passing airplanes see the glitter. They supposedly practice mental telepathy. They shop in seed and when people try to find their city they are stopped by mental telepathy. (I've heard of them + also read about this in a magazine). Since the 3 nephews wear coon skin hats for their Junior Woodchucks I was thinking of a nest of motherless raccoons seeing the hats + following them to cuddle up to. Bumper Seed Co. of Calif. is offering a fabulous fortune to anyone who can grow a white marigold. Don might try. It's a case of bedding some plants + taking only pale ones to use for breeding, then trying to keep bees out or dust of any kind after you've pollinated them with a feather - tipped with pale flower pollen. Don + 3 nephews might also be on a tropic isle for vacation when the crabs migrate back to sea to lay eggs. The ground is solid with crabs. Horse + buggy racing up Glass mountain. Special shoes were fit on the horses and whoever got highest on the mountain won. No winner ever reached the top. (They actually did this in grandpa's day on glass mountain by Canby). A guy got caught in a trap set over 100 years ago. It was set for poachers on an old English estate. It's mechanism was still perfect. It required a locksmith + blacksmith to remove it. (Just read this story). There is a monstrous snail which science is touting for getting rid of small snails and slugs for farmers and such. What would happen if it ran out of said food? |
FULL SYNOPSIS | |
Don the aircraft spotter. Don joins the civilian air defense (plane
spotter). The air force sargeant gives Don the code name
and members to call on the phone to the filter center.
Don becomes so puffed up he buys a uniform closely
resembling the air force's and walks around saluting
officers and telling privates "to look sharp!".
This embarrasses the nephews and causes many sharp
comments at the lookout tower, from other spotters. |
The photograph was taken in 1923 in front of the family home in Roseville, California. It reads: Carl and Peggy. |
