The writer of stories, Carl Barks,
was also a gifted writer of letters. This fact is easily
confirmed by reading them; they are filled with strong opinions,
analyses, important events, and wit. They also show how
articulate and precise he was in his native language which is a
far cry from his first feeble attempts at the typewriter when
living in Roseville, California in the 1920s. At that time Barks
made an attempt to be an author but the idea stranded partly on
his failing knowledge of the English language. Later - in the
second half of his life - he made up for it!
The general purpose of this page is to give an insight to Barks'
way of thinking while dealing with (primarily) his fans. This is done through a selection of his
numerous letters which were usually written on his typewriter. 'Three
words a minute', as he once stated. Only
passages and fragments that are of interest to a wide audience
are published here. The letters are placed in chronological order
to enable you to follow how Barks was thinking and changing
through the years, and how he felt on specific subjects.
As mentioned, most of the correspondence was written to answer his fans, but many of his fans became his friends as well. You will know most of their names. This page also contains many private letters to the family from both Carl and his wife Garé. The Editor wishes to express his gratitude towards the family for the kind permission to publish the parts of the correspondence that have public interest and relevance.
NB.: Three dots (...) indicate that certain text passages have been omitted in the published texts. Wherever possible, the letters are being accompanied by pictures relating to the texts.
