Carl Barks was always well-liked by
his fellow artists and they often made loving caricatures of him.
It all began in the Disney years (1935-1942) when the colleagues
in the studios would let off steam and tease each other using the
tools of their trade - pen and paper. Barks later recollected: - The
paper we wasted! Good
highest grade watermarked bond!
Barks seems to have been one of the favourite subjects of these
parodies. Some of his facial features surely helped them along -
the big glasses and the prominent nose. But he was also somewhat
of a loner who was more interested in his work. This apparently
earned him a few loving nicknames as seen below. He also had
slightly different interests than his colleagues and their
drawings clearly reflect this.
The sketches shown are from different fellow artists such as Chuck Couch and Nick George. They were all done as spontaneous in-jokes, but they are still enjoyable today because they give us a glimpse of Barks' everyday life at that time.
