Some of the primary characters in Carl Barks' funny animal comic book stories tend to be perceived as less than successful in several situations. But although they are seen in an unflattering light, they have all had their red-letter days as well. This page attempts to give a few examples of specific characters in uncharacteristic situations.
Below you are treated to some of the most often unlucky and thoughtless Barney Bear's and Benny Burro's more rare, triumphant moments. Barks made several stories with this special comic book pair during the mid 1940s (see more HERE).
OG09 - 1944 Benny is challenged to an agility test by a speedy mountain goat, that quickly out jumps and outruns the slower Benny. But in the end he saves the goat's life by scaring off a hungry wolf. |
OG17 - 1945 Benny and Barney desperately try to find water in the desert with the latter's water divining rod, but all they find is oil, gold, and diamonds! Finally, the rod finds a canteen of water - in a prospector's backpack... |
OG36 - 1947 Barney is accused of stealing pocket watches from his neighbours, until it is revealed that the real culprit is his own new pet magpie, that simply likes to collect shiny objects. |
OG22 - 1946 Barney is visited by his 'little' nephew, who has an uncanny appetite. In a desperate attempt to get rid of the glutton Benny succeeds in luring the nephew to go and pester another family member. |
OG24 - 1946 Benny persuades Barney to accompany him on a camping trip to the wild outdoors, but everything goes wrong for Barney. He gets his revenge by forcing Benny to wait on him in the safety of his own home. |
OG34 - 1947 Barney sells his house in order to get away from his violent neighbour, but he cannot find new lodgings. Luckily, he is able to buy back his old home in the end, and everything is back to (ab)normal. |
OG21 - 1946 Benny does not understand Barney's urge to hibernate over winter, so he forces the half-sleeping bear to go on a ski trip. After several disasters Barney starts his resting, Benny capitulates and goes to bed, too. |
OG18 - 1945 Barney tries hard to serenade a mysterious seņorita, but a merciless rival 'wins' her in an ensuing duel. Barney is devastated, until he discovers that his 'little feather' grossly outweighs him... |
OG14 - 1944 Barney and Benny are herding lambs, but a wolf takes one. They set a trap for the carnivore, but Benny gets taken to the wolf's lair. In the end Barney succeeds in saving his partner. |
OG08 - 1943 Benny wants to play with the beavers, but they are busy with their tasks. Then he tries to help them, but everything goes wrong. A wise owl advises him to just simmer down, which Benny finally does under a shady tree... |
OG19 - 1945 Barney almost kills Benny accidentally with his hunting rifle, so Benny suggests that he confines himself to hunt a turtle for soup instead. One bites down on Barney's toe, and it only lets go when it gets overpowered by stinging bees. |
OG28 - 1946 Barney sees himself as a gifted artist, and he goes out in nature to paint a real masterpiece. Unfortunately, the canvas gets battered and smeared in a variety of foreign matters, but the by now abstract 'painting' wins first prize... |
