It is possible that Barks -
consciously or not - had two special characters from the
wartime cartoon The Spirit of '43 (1943) in mind,
when he created Scrooge McDuck (1947) and Gladstone
Gander (1948). In the film Donald is torn between buying
war bonds or spend his excess money on frolics.
The responsible, elderly character appeals to Donald to
save money and support the war effort by investing his
money in war bonds, whereas the carefree, happy-go-lucky
young character asks Donald to just have a good time in
the bar.
Do the two characters resemble the ones that Barks
invented a few years later? You be the judge...
