EXTRA

The responsible character

The carefree character

It is possible that Barks - consciously or not - had two special characters from the wartime cartoon The Spirit of '43 (1943) in mind, when he created Scrooge McDuck (1947) and Gladstone Gander (1948). In the film Donald is torn between buying war bonds or spend his excess money on frolics.
The responsible, elderly character appeals to Donald to save money and support the war effort by investing his money in war bonds, whereas the carefree, happy-go-lucky young character asks Donald to just have a good time in the bar.
Do the two characters resemble the ones that Barks invented a few years later? You be the judge...
