JEFF CAIN

Jeff Cain is a successful art collector and dealer specializing in the paintings of Carl Barks and his wife Garé, and he has formed a painting studio called CBR (Carl Barks Remembered).
Cain: The CBR Studio was set up to paint scenes that Barks might have painted in the 1971-1976 era - but didn't. There were well-known comic book covers that had never been painted (or were not painted as well as possible), and various other scenes that were never done. I had created many layouts for the original EC artists (Tales from the Crypt) so now I took it up a notch, laying out specific Barks-like scenes that I could see inside my head. I used old-fashioned methods, doing everything on paper and nothing by computer. Finally, it was decided to omit my name as well as that of the individual artist involved, to keep the focus entirely on the World of Carl Barks.

Pixilated Parrot

The first CBR painting re-created the cover of FC0282 from 1950, which Carl never painted. Scrooge was added to balance out the large image of Donald, and because Scrooge was the character in the story who was most shocked to see that his beloved Money Bin had been invaded!

Halloween Boo-nanza

Carl did two versions of his Trick or Treat comic book cover, but converted to horizontal paintings with a lot of other creatures added, the scene lost much of it's original charm and flavor. I decided to feature an older, 1948 Donald as the central image, hilariously terrified when he sees an angry, floating pumpkin head moving above the top of a fence, not realizing that it's only a carved pumpkin being carried on a pole by one of his own nephews!

Old McDuck Had a Farm

Inspired by a comic book panel where Scrooge sits back at his desk, and savors the satisfaction of being the world's richest person. The nephews are raking and gathering greenbacks as if they were being grown there in the bin (because Scrooge's wealth was always increasing!). A Photo-Shop computerized layout version made it clear that Carl would have brought Donald and his three nephews much closer to the viewer, but I wanted to show more coins in my layout than any Money Bin scene that Carl had ever painted. And I did!
